I am currently licensed in Iowa and Nebraska with over 26 years of professional work experience. The bulk of my career has been in community-based settings as I felt this type of setting was where I could give back to those that have helped me and my family of origin. I had a mother that was bi-polar and had a significant borderline personality disorder. Her first major hospitalization occurred following my birth. I have grown up in the Midwest but have lived in California and South Carolina as well as serving in the US military with one deployment to Afghanistan in which I served as the highest-ranking enlisted member of the Human Intelligence component of a Brigade Combat Team. I have a grown gay son and feel that my own healing process in coming to terms with my feelings toward my mentally ill mother were greatly facilitated by friendships in the queer community and feel a great depth of gratitude and respect for this community. I have been divorced, struggled with my own addiction, co-dependency and mental health issues throughout my lifetime and have carried various mental health diagnoses at different times in my life as well. I don't look at myself as complete expert on life but to quote Brene' Brown: "I might just be a little further down the road in recovery is all". I view therapy as more of an art form in that there are skills and techniques that can be learned and applied to the work of art that is being created, but it is the process involved that brings out the beauty of the final product. I understand the importance of being heard and feel that a person's truth can emerge through a collective experience in the interaction and engagement with another human being. I hope to bring my experience in life and working with others to your life experience. I am licensed in Iowa and Illinois with 9 years of professional clinical work experience. I have a Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling, a Masters of Divinity with 4 Units of Clinical Pastoral Education, and over 15 years of Ministerial/Pastoral Practice. I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, coping with addictions, trauma and abuse, coping with grief and loss, & dementia caregiver stress. Our sessions will be focused on finding solutions to your issues, whatever they might be. I am an independent licensed mental health counselor, and have worked in the field for over twenty years. During that time, I have worked with individuals, couples that are together, and couples that are separated. I have worked with families coping with addiction, and many individuals coping with mental health issues such as: depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, OCD, ADHD, to mention a few. Sometimes problems were precipitated by life changes such as : loss of loved one, health , financial issues, and work and family conflicts. My approach is client-centered which was Carl Rogers' approach, simply "make friends". I want my clients to feel emotionally safe and know that we are in this recovery together. We assess the problem and make the treatment plan together. I also use Reality Therapy which helps them assume responsibility for their choices and actions and as they learn this, make better decisions going forward. CBT and RET are two more modalities that I find useful. All these are helpful tools for clients, but I find it's important to teach clients the art of forgiveness for others and themselves, "acceptance ". I have been in practice for just over 17 years and have worked in a number of positions providing psychotherapy to individuals, children, adolescents, couples and families in different settings. I have worked with individuals expressing many different concerns, some have adjustment concerns and some have major mental health diagnosis and supporting through life changes. I graduated with a Masters of Arts in Counseling in 2004 and I am an Independent Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP) as well as an Instructor for a Community College. In working closely with people I have found that using a multitude of different theoretical approaches is finding the one that best suits the individual. A few of the approaches are Client Centered, Cognitive behavioral, Dialectal Behavior, and Existential to name a few. It is beneficial to match the style that is most productive with the concerns of the individual and determine together the approach to the most beneficial outcome. I have worked with diagnosis that range from depression/anxiety to Paranoid Schizophrenia and individuals that are self mutilating.
