It is a privilege to take care of patients with breast cancer. Each patient is different, each breast cancer is different and treatment recommendations are tailored to the individual patient. At the Weill Cornell Breast Center, we work as a team to recommend the optimal treatment plan for each patient. We have begun a new initiative, a "survivorship" program to study and support our patients throughout their lifetime after a breast cancer diagnosis. It is exciting to be in the forefront of breast cancer research not only with our own group at the Breast Center but also as part of the exciting research going on across the nation. Benjamin Samstein, MD is Chief of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery in the Department of Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine and Associate Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University. Dr. Samstein is the Surgical Director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant Program at NYP. Dr. Samstein is a renowned pioneer in minimally invasive liver surgery and state-of-the-art laparoscopic techniques for liver cancer. Dr. Samstein is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. Dr. Samstein heads up the multidisciplinary liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery team at NYP/Weill Cornell. His specialties include the most advanced laparoscopic procedures for liver cancer, benign liver tumors and hepatobiliary pancreatic disease. He has been invited to talk about minimally invasive liver surgery throughout the world. He is a member of many surgical societies including a founding member of the International Laparoscopic Liver Society (ILLS), American Society of Transplant Surgery, American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA). He did his internship and residency in general surgery at NYP/Columbia, and completed a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in 2001. He completed a fellowship in ASTS Multi-organ transplant at NYP/Columbia in 2006. He was Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center from 2006 to 2015. He served as Program Director of the transplant surgery fellowship at Columbia University from 2007 to 2015. Dr. Jennifer H. Kuo is a board-certified surgeon-scientist nationally recognized for her expertise in the surgical treatment of thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal diseases. Dr. Kuo is an accomplished, high-volume surgeon in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including trans-oral thyroidectomy and robotic adrenalectomy. She is one of the leading international experts in ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation of thyroid nodules and spearheaded the new Interventional Endocrinology program at Columbia. Dr. Kuo also serves as Program Director of the Endocrine Surgery Fellowship Program and the Endocrine Surgery Research program. Her research focuses on the use of predictive algorithms to improve and optimize care for endocrine patients, and is internationally recognized as a pioneer in the safe adoption of new technology in surgical care. Michael S. Samuel, M.D. is an Assistant Professorof Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and Assistant Attending Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Samuel took an indirect route to medicine, initially receiving his B.A. in English and Anthropology from Union College. He worked as a treatment counselor for developmentally disabled at-risk youth, and then as a teacher of English as a foreign language in Shenzhen, China.Dr. Samuel subsequently joined the leukemia program at Weill Cornell Medical College as a clinical trials research assistant while completing post-baccalaureate studies at Columbia University. He then received his MD from SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine in 2009. Thereafter, Dr. Samuel completed both his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Montefiore Medical Center. His medical training also included experiences studying acupuncture in Beijing, China, and service as a physician on the medical ward at Kisoro District Hospital in Uganda.Throughout his medical training Dr. Samuel maintained a focus on hematological malignancies and spent his final year of fellowship in the lab of Kira Gritsman, MD, PhD, at Albert Einstein Cancer Center studying the genetic determinants of PI3 kinase pathway dependence in leukemic development. Dr. Samuel now rejoins the Leukemia Program in the division of Hematology/Oncology at Weill Cornell Medical College where he will specialize in the treatment of patients with leukemia, myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative neoplasms, and will be actively involved in the clinical trials research within the program.

As far back as I remember, I have been interested in improving the care of patients with cancer through research aimed at developing new and more effective therapies, and by providing compassionate care. I am fortunate to work at an institution that enables me to care for patients within an outstanding hospital and medical college, where I am surrounded by like-minded physicians and staff that are most concerned about the well-being of our patients and their family members. The close relationships I develop with my patients and the continued efforts by my colleagues and me to find a cure inspire me to come to work every day with new hope and determination.

Pancreatic cancer has been my area of clinical and research focus for the past 15 years. I participated in the process of recognition that outcomes of complex surgery such as that for pancreatic cancer are better in high volume centers when performed by experienced surgeons. In 2006, I conceived, funded and built a multidisciplinary unit with the mission of improving overall outcomes in pancreatic cancer care by integrating the care of multiple medical specialists.

My practice focuses on treating gastrointestinal malignancies, including colorectal, pancreatic, stomach, biliary, neuroendocrine, and liver cancers. I place great value on having strong physician-patient relationships and feel this is especially important in cancer care. I not only provide state-of-the art cancer treatment for my patients and their families, but comprehensive support through a compassionate and multidisciplinary approach. Through clinical research, I am able to offer my patients access to the latest therapies such as radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies, cancer "vaccines," immunotherapy, and other novel targeted agents.
