Benjamin Samstein, MD is Chief of Liver Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery in the Department of Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine and Associate Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University. Dr. Samstein is the Surgical Director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant Program at NYP. Dr. Samstein is a renowned pioneer in minimally invasive liver surgery and state-of-the-art laparoscopic techniques for liver cancer. Dr. Samstein is a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. Dr. Samstein heads up the multidisciplinary liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery team at NYP/Weill Cornell. His specialties include the most advanced laparoscopic procedures for liver cancer, benign liver tumors and hepatobiliary pancreatic disease. He has been invited to talk about minimally invasive liver surgery throughout the world. He is a member of many surgical societies including a founding member of the International Laparoscopic Liver Society (ILLS), American Society of Transplant Surgery, American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA). Dr. Samstein is well-published in the field, authoring more than 40 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious medical and surgical journals, books and book chapters. Other areas of clinical expertise include hepatic adenoma, hepatic hemangioma, cholangiocarcinoma, colorectal metastasis, live donor nephrectomy, laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy, and pediatric liver and organ transplant. Dr. Samstein received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1992 and earned his MD at the State University of New York at Stonybrook in 1997. He did his internship and residency in general surgery at NYP/Columbia, and completed a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in 2001. He completed a fellowship in ASTS Multi-organ transplant at NYP/Columbia in 2006. He was Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center from 2006 to 2015. He served as Program Director of the transplant surgery fellowship at Columbia University from 2007 to 2015. Michael S. Samuel, M.D. is an Assistant Professorof Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and Assistant Attending Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Samuel took an indirect route to medicine, initially receiving his B.A. in English and Anthropology from Union College. He worked as a treatment counselor for developmentally disabled at-risk youth, and then as a teacher of English as a foreign language in Shenzhen, China.Dr. Samuel subsequently joined the leukemia program at Weill Cornell Medical College as a clinical trials research assistant while completing post-baccalaureate studies at Columbia University. He then received his MD from SUNY Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine in 2009. Thereafter, Dr. Samuel completed both his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Montefiore Medical Center. His medical training also included experiences studying acupuncture in Beijing, China, and service as a physician on the medical ward at Kisoro District Hospital in Uganda.Throughout his medical training Dr. Samuel maintained a focus on hematological malignancies and spent his final year of fellowship in the lab of Kira Gritsman, MD, PhD, at Albert Einstein Cancer Center studying the genetic determinants of PI3 kinase pathway dependence in leukemic development. Dr. Samuel now rejoins the Leukemia Program in the division of Hematology/Oncology at Weill Cornell Medical College where he will specialize in the treatment of patients with leukemia, myelodysplasia and myeloproliferative neoplasms, and will be actively involved in the clinical trials research within the program.

Dr. Furman is Director of the CLL Research Center at Weill Cornell Medicineand a member of the Lymphoma/Myeloma Service in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. I am a medical oncologist who specializes in cancers of the lung and thymus. I work closely with our multidisciplinary team of expert thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, interventional radiologists, palliative care/pain management specialists, and nutritionists to provide comprehensive care for our patients. I view each patient and their disease as unique and work to manage their treatment accordingly, always keeping their goals in mind. In order to provide new hopes for the future of lung cancer treatment, our division is also involved in clinical research focusing on precsion medicine, immunotherapy, and novel therapeutics as well as laboratory research to better understand this disease.

Pinkal Desai MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and Assistant Attending Physician at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital.After obtaining her MBBS at Byramjeejeebhoy Medical College in India in 2005, Dr. Desai obtained an MPH at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health. Following her residency at Wayne State University, Detroit Medical Center, she underwent fellowship training in Hematology-Medical Oncology at Providence Hospital Medical Center, serving as Chief Fellow from 2012-2013. Dr. Desai was recruited to serve in our Leukemia Program to develop a clinical practice devoted to leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). She will be developing clinical and translational research protocols and projects in the areas of leukemia, MDS and MPN.Dr. Desai is published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers Prevention and International Journal of Molecular Epidemiology and Genetics. She is the lead author and co-author on numerous WHI (Women's Health Initiative) paper proposals and has presented abstracts at national meetings.
