Surgeons are often thought of as being rushed, brief and without concern outside of the technical performance of procedures, but most surgeons today, in particular neurosurgeons, do a lot of preoperative conservative treatment and planning prior to considering an operation. I want patients to understand that the decision to undergo an operation should not be undertaken lightly and should be a last option after the failure of other conservative methods of treatment. The only "minor operation" is one being done on someone else. Treatment of pain conditions, particularly chronic conditions can be difficult and surgery is not always the answer. Often even with a surgery the most important factors for recovery include healthy habits, weight loss and therapy. I want patients to feel comfortable with their procedure and have all their questions answered prior to proceeding.

Katherine Menzel, MPAS, PA-C, is a board-certified physician assistant with LewisGale PhysiciansNeurosurgery in Salem, Virginia. Mrs. Menzel earned herMaster of SciencePhysician Assistant Studies from Wingate University. She alsohas a graduate certificate in medical physiology from University of Florida anda Bachelor of Science in biological sciences from Clemson University, whereshe was a nationally-ranked rower. Mrs. Menzel is board-certified by the National Commission for Certifying Physician Assistants. In addition to diagnosing and treating her patients, her clinical experience includes serving as a surgical first assist, pre-and post-operative care, and wound care. Prior to becoming a physician assistant, Mrs. Menzel worked as a physical therapy aide and a nursing assistant. In her free time she loves to enjoy the outdoors, including running, biking, hiking,and training for triathlons.

Eric grew up in Michigan where he developed an appreciation for the outdoors and all things adventurous. He enjoys hiking, archery, rock climbing, wood working, kayaking and time with family.
