Dr. Sharma sees patients ages 3 and above. She specializes in treating patients with chronic illness and is a firm believer in educating them on preventive care. She speaks fluent Nepali and Hindi.

Understanding the patient's background, and getting to know the patient as a whole, allows me to provide the best care possible for the patient, and to formulate an individual plan of care for each of my patient's. Biography: Dr. Shanmugam received her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, graduating with honors. She completed her residency at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. After working in a private pediatric practice for five years, she moved to San Diego and joined Arch (then Centre for Health Care) in 2001. Dr. Shanmugan enjoys learning about the families in her practice and watching their children grow and develop. She likes the diagnostic challenges that arise in pediatrics as well. Her special interest is in autoimmune disorders such as Celiac Disease and Type I Diabetes. Dr. Shanmugan holds degrees in both biology and music, and has volunteered her talents in the latter at her young daughter's elementary school and at church. She also enjoys walking, hiking and bicycling, as well as travelling. Her current goal is to try backpacking in the Sierras with her husband and two daughters.
