top notch
Totally positive experience with Gastro Health from start through completing my colonoscopy today. I typically do all my care with Inova, but had roadblocks there getting appointments, non-return calls, and scheduling with Inova's gastroenterology office, so I reached out here. I had had some blood tests and symptoms that meant I needed a follow-up non-routine colonoscopy for more diagnosis. I first saw a terrific PA in a virtual appointment, and she scheduled me with Dr. Axelrad quickly for the procedure. Check-in to out-the-door was under 3 hours. Super nice facility and staff. Dr. Axelrad both pre and post procedure took time to explain process, was reassuring yet detailed, and put me at ease - really thorough - and answered my questions. Highest marks possible. Thanks doctor!

Impossible to schedule - uncaring
Have had positive experiences with procedures; physician is not personable but seemed extremely competent. Impossible to makes schedules for routine procedures - wants to hand patients off to physician's assistant or LPN, only by video, and with an hour check-in before. This puts a huge burden on the patient to get to a location to attend a video call - - completely "physican-centric" with no appreciation of the needs of the clients

Kicked Me Out for having a mental illness
I saw Dr. Axelrad years ago when I first got diagnosed with Gastroparesis. It was not so common then and it was hard finding a GI that could understand how debilitating it had become and work with me on a treatment plan. Well, I was sitting in his office nervously waiting for him, as most patients do, upon meeting a dr. for the first time. He opened the door, didn’t introduce himself but said something that haunted me for years, “ I see you are on Seroquel. Are you Schizophrenic?” He said it with disdain. I answered him truthfully, No. I use it for sleep disturbances. It was all written down on my pages and pages of paper work. We started talking about the real issue; my health, but he started asking me more questions about all of my medications. I understand that is part of an assessment, but whenever a “ mental health medication “ came up, he thoroughly questioned me.He called his wife in to tell me to leave. I was discriminated against for having mental illness.

highly recommend
I recently underwent an endoscopy and a colonoscopy with Dr. Axelrad. He took his time before and after both procedures to explain what he would be doing and what he found, as well as for me to ask questions. He and his staff did a great job of making me feel welcome and relaxed, and both procedures were easy and uneventful. I plan to see him again for future routine colonoscopies.

Getting through the barriers
The 1 star for the process, not the doctor. In the past, I have been impressed with Dr. Axelrad. Today, I called to make an appointment at the direction of my family doctor for a condition that leaves him baffled. The auto voice on the main number said there is a new number for appointments. I called the new number and was told Dr. Axelrad could see me VIRTUALLY in February. I explained why it was important that I be examined by a doctor and was told there was another doctor that could do a VIRTUAL on December 23. When I asked how he could examine me over the computer, he said I might be able to see a PA. My last Appointment with Dr. Axelread, October 12, an appointment with a PA - who pushed my stomach and said it felt like a lot of gas. That was the total of the examination. So, I can get another PA or a virtual appointment December 23 or in February. I don't think so. I'll be asking my GP for a recommendation for another doctor. Sad, I really was impressed with Dr. Axelrad.

He’s not a doctor
Lousy. Absolute arrogant jerk. He’s a pill pusher and if you’ve tried all his pills you’re insane and nothing is wrong with you. He said stop saying you have gastritis when his own report said there was erosive gastritis throughout my whole stomach. How his ratings are as high as they are is beyond me. No desire to figure out what’s wrong just looking to get out of the room and get his fee.

I’ve been seeing Dr Axelrad for over a decade and can’t say enough positive comments about him and the other professional staff and the administrative staff. It was easy to make an appointment and I didn’t wait long to be led back to the examination room. Dr Axelrad is very knowledgeable about my disease and very easy to talk with. His explanations are easy to understand and he welcomes questions. I’m also in the medical field and can be very critical about others, but the doctor is truely outstanding !!! I have seen other doctors and the PAs in the practice while in the hospital and all are excellent. Overall, the practice goes above and beyond in every aspect of patient care, billing, and follow up.
