Delayed my cancer treatment for 3 months!
I allowed Depew to do a lumpectomy when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. From the beginning I felt like I was on a conveyer belt without regard to me as an individual. After consulting with 2 oncologists (one in radiology) and my PCP and with their support, I made the decision to have a double mastectomy. He argued with me and refused to do it. I pointed out that I had the legal right to decide on my care but he didn’t agree. Instead of arranging an actual 2nd opinion, he took my file to another surgeon and basically said, “She doesn’t NEED a double mastectomy, does she?” His scare tactics and steamrolling continued for 3 months, until the head of oncology called him on it. Then he called me, acting magnanimous, and told me he decided he’d do it. By that time I’d found another surgeon and scheduled the surgery. I felt like he resented the fact that I questioned him and had an opinion regarding my own care.
