Dr. Bengt Herweg, MD

Dr. Herweg was recommended to me by my cardiologist. I found him to be factual, confident and competent. He answered all of my questions both prior and post procedure. He managed my expectations and I had good results.

i was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation by my cardiologist back in August, 2023. This doctor had me wear a Holter Monitor to validate his diagnosis and it showed me in persistent afib with a very slow heart beat. He referred me to Dr. Herweg and said I'd be a good candidate for a Watchman device. Dr. Herweg scheduled an ablation for Nov 2023. During this procedure, he found a blood clot, so he stopped the procedure. Instead in January, 2024 he implanted the Watchman device successfully and in May 2024 rescheduled my ablation. This was performed this week and it was 100% successful. Even my Kardia mobile device showed that before the procedure I was in afib and after I'm back to normal sinus rhythm. I thank Dr. Herweg for his excellent surgical skills and putting my health and safety above all else.

Dr Herweg is awesome doctor he explains everything that’s going actually listens to you and tells you what exactly what needs to be done to fix the problem. I’m a former patient of the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio and since I’ve moved to Florida and became a patient of Tampa General I feel a lot better and being a patient of DR Herweg and Dr Makie I must say im feeling way physically and mentally. Dr. Herwerg replaced my pacemaker and did synchronization adding a defibrillator line. Knowledgeable, certainly professional. He is a straightforward doctor with excellent skill. I am grateful for his work.

Dr. Herweg and team have taken care of me for many years. I totally trust them and the fact they are 'straight-shooters' and tell me exactly my status, etc. If you have electrically issues with your heart, I don't think you can find a better place to go.

So it seems like the positive 5 star reviews are probably from friends or family. Because all the negative reviews are straight on. He doesn't care about following up with patients. I've been having an on going issue for almost a year and I'm not holding my breath that it will get taken care of. I almost feel like if/when a procedure he does, doesn't turn out to what it should have actually been, he doesn't want to correct or hear about that "mistake" He's definitely arrogant and has one of the biggest God complexes I've ever seen. I could go on but he's not worth my time.

Dr. Herweg is a serious-minded, no-nonsense master of ablation catheter maneuvering and manipulation to achieve superior outcomes in arresting serious & complex arrhythmias. In my case, he was able to navigate to the left ventricular summit (the most inaccessible spot for an ablation) using a venous pathway only (avoiding the riskier arterial approach), to a spot in close proximity to my coronary artery, and with his skill was able to safely & successfully ablate my major excessive PVC source. In total he did 7 ablation burns to totally eliminate my 23% excessive PVC burden rate. After e precautionary overnight stay, the next morning I was able to walk out of TGH on my own as expected -- feeling great! I recommend him highly! (04/27/2021)

Dr Herwig is the most talented and experienced EP doctor in the Tampa area and maybe in Florida. He is very frank and direct in his communication, his confidence comes from his training, experience and skills. He is the one you want if you have a tough case or have dire circumstance. He explained everything to me and even drew me a picture. He listened to me and in the end we agreed on a wait and see approach. He is a rare Dr in my sadly lengthy experience of 20 years with VT/VF and CHF. He is very up to speed on all the very latest techniques and treatments. I have been to Cleavland Clinic Cleavland , UF , TGH. Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and all over Central Florida and I trust him fully and recommend him highly.

As a practicing RN I can attest that Dr. Herwig is brilliant, compassionate, and cares deeply for his patients. He is honest and direct in his approach. Dr. Herwig communication to his patients on their diagnosis and prognosis is right on. He is a jerk. He decided what I wanted before asking. I explained to him if I pass away I believe in the Lord God and he dismissed me.

Arrogant does not come close to explain this man. He is a doctor but thinks he is a God. Other hospital personnel said he has no bedside manners. He did not even come in to explain operation results and threatened me if I did not follow his precise orders. He personally attacked my wife's views. The hospital or his staff did not give her updates through the procedure. He may be good, at least he thinks he is, but there is more to being a doctor. I definitely recommend finding someone else!

Dr Herwig successfully ablated two extra circuits in my heart in April ‘18 . My first episode of AV Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia occurred at age 13 and I endured years of lengthy episodes of tachycardia. At age 68 my heart is now in normal sinus rhythm with no occurrences of rapid heart rate. ( ten months to date ) I can’t thank Dr Herwig enough, he changed my life and I recommend him highly to anyone who suffers with Heart arrhythmia.

Dr. Herweg is arrogant. I want a confident doctor to go into my heart and zap it back into rhythm -- but not an arrogant jerk with a God complex. He does not spend time with patients, is impatient and dismissive. Well, Dude, you are going into my heart! Don't you think you owe me some information? For what you are paid, you should treat patients with respect and make sure they understand what is going on? You act like I am ignorant, but I have an advanced degree, too. Go elsewhere.

Dr. Herweg consistently serves as a model of what to expect from an exceptional clinician. He is focused and attentive; remembers nuances about medical history; takes the time to explain options and ensure that the patient really understands. And his surgical work has exceeded my expectations.

Not impressed at all. Not helpful, didn't respond to my questions or concerns. Will definitely be looking for another doctor. Made it seem like I was going to die tomorrow if I didn't have surgery, then in the same breath said it would be 2-3 months before he could do anything... WTH??

Dr Herweg is the definition of excellence. He's so knowledeablge and meticulous when it comes to the care of his patients. If you're ever lucky enough to have him as your doctor, he's not the typical "sit down and sugar coat things" guy. He is very short and to the point. It isn't for lack or caring or bedside manner, it is because he's the "I KNOW what is wrong and am fixing it for you ." guy. My partner was seen by every doctor in our area with no answers. Dr. Herweg knew them right away. A++
