Great Cornea Surgeon
Dr. Groat agreed to treat me, an elderly patient with a medically complex condition. He performed two successful cornea transplants on me. Dr. Groat is pleasant and patiently takes time to thoroughly address questions and concerns. The entire staff is outstanding, knowledgeable, compassionate and helpful. I highly recommend Dr. Groat and his staff!

Long wait time
On May 21, 2024, I arrived for a 2:15 appointment for an annual eye exam with Dr. Groat. Two examinations by employees of Dr. Groat were completed. After these examinations, my pupils were dilated in preparation for an eye examination to be performed by Dr. Groat. I was taken to an examination room before 3:00 p.m.I waited in that examination room for over Ninety minutes while, I believe, Dr. Groat met with a sales representative (based on what I heard trough the examination room wall). At 4:40 p.m., when Dr. Groat entered the examination room, he did not perform an examination of my dilated eyes.Dr. Groat's visit lasted three minutes, while he looked at my eye images on a computer screen, before rushing out to his next patient.I understand that a visit from a medical sales representative to a physicians practice is essential, and I, as an individual patient, am not. But there should be a better way.

Arrogant doctor and problems afterwards
I had 2 cataract surgeries in 2023 by Dr. Groat. The first went eye surgery was successful but during the 2nd eye surgery Dr. Groat sliced (his words) my cornea. It was not mentioned in the surgical notes other than the fact that he placed a contact bandage. When I asked him at my 2nd post op whether the slice would heal perfectly, his comment was, 'I don't know. I'm not perfect. Are you perfect?' He also told me that it was my fault that he sliced my eye because I moved my eye. After surgery I developed double vision in that eye, which I never had before, and after 9 months I still have it. I understand that all surgeries are risky but I was shocked at his arrogance and casual answers I received from Dr. Groat. I would not recommend him.

THANK YOU DR. GROAT
IT HAS BEEN SEVERAL MONTHS SINCE MY LAST VISIT. DR. GROAT DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB OF RESOLVING A SEVERE ISSUE WITH MY LEFT EYE. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO LOSE MY SIGHT, BUT HIS TALENT, EDUCATION, AND DETERMINATION PAID OFF. I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL. HE IS A VERY CARING PERSON. HIS ENTIRE STAFF IS JUST SIMPLY OUTSTANDING.

Always in a hurry
He has absolutely no time for his patients. He was late for every appointment and every surgery. He rushes in to do a quick exam, and you have to literally stop him from leaving to ask a question. Today at my final appointment, he basically said that the reason my outcome was poor was due to prior LASIK surgery, and I needed to see an optometrist for glasses. Instead I am going to get a second opinion. Definitely stay away from him!

Always in a Hurry!!!
I think he is probably a good doctor....however he is always in a RUSH. I feel he needs to slow down and LISTEN to his patients a little more. He did cataract surgery on me and yes everythng about the surgery went good....I am thankful for this...but I told him I wanted to be able to read road signes with the new lens implants...I was already accustomed to reading glasses.... but that is NOT what I ended up with. I still can not see road signs until really close but I can read without glasses close up .... the complete opposite of what I ask for. I know every case is different but if what I wanted was not an option I would have appreciated being told this as well as why. Needless to say I am not completely happy and I did try and express this to him after the surgery but his comment was not pleasant at all...."patients being unappreciative." I thought he should have at least listened to me and offered an explination instead of dismissing my concerns with such a curt comment.

My husband just had his first DMEK partial corneal transplant with Dr. Groat and he did an amazing job! It is like a miracle how well he can see again. He suffers from Fuch's Dysmorphia and his eyesight has been deteriorating for years. Dr. Groat has given him such a tremendous gift of sight back. Very good surgeon and would highly recommend him. Cannot wait to have his other eye done.

As a retired ophthalmologist, I am so pleased with my cataract surgery outrageous outcomes! I would have pushed my own patients to have things done earlier if I had known how the quality of my vision would be so improved! My uncorrected vision is better than since I got my first glasses at age 18.... It's crazy how my night vision and colors have improved! The experience at the he surgery center was excellent... this is a short and painless event/procedure and the staff there was fantastic! If you are on the fence about having your cataract surgery... contact his office and he can put you in touch with me.... somebody who has already done this surgery thousands of times and chose to let Dr. Groat fix mine!! I was extremely fortunate to have Dr. Groat do my cataract surgery two years ago. It was a truly life changing experience. My vision had gotten so bad that I was nervous driving and afraid to drive after dark. Dr. Groat gave me back perfect distance vision and I only need reading glasses for very small print. He was also able to correct my terrible astigmatism. All of the motion sickness and headaches that occurred due to the astigmatism ended with the surgery. The toric lenses were the best investment that I have ever made and definitely worth the cost. Dr. Groat is a truly gifted surgeon and a kind caring professional.

Dr. Groat and his staff are awesome. I was referred by my optometrist to Cape Fear Cataract and Cornea for surgery. I was very nervous at the thought of having surgery but everyone was so nice and put my mind at ease. There was no waiting in the office - as soon as I was checked in by the nice lady at the front desk, the technician called me back. I feel like I was given a very through exam and Dr. Groat answered all of my questions. The surgery went smoothly - I am thrilled with the outcome.
