When I asked him how he set focus at infinity in the replacement lens for cataract surgery he stated “I set far vision from here to that wall,” pointing to a wall in the examination room that was about 3 meters away. Before I could finish formulating my next question, he showed me his back while walking away and saying “that’s how I do it.” He scheduled cataract surgery. He aborted the surgery by telling me that my systolic arterial pressure of 140 mmHg put me at serious risk for a “second stroke.” The truth is that there was never a first stroke, as confirmed later in the emergency room of University Hospital (a lever 3 trauma center). My wife was in the room. He sat next to her and started a conversation alternating between English and Spanish. I remember with great clarity the Spanglish statement that in English translation reads: “Everyone works for me and my brother is the sheriff of Broward County.”
