My 79 yo husband was referred to Dr Spiceland for an ultrasound and an endoscopy due to various symptoms (swelling, shortness of breath, fatigue, etc). He diagnosed my husband with stage 3 fatty liver disease and gastritis. He told me that, due to my husband’s age, he just doesn’t worry about it, but if my husband were younger, that would be a different story. I did my own research and learned that with diet and exercise, fatty liver disease can be reversed. We received ZERO recommendations from this Dr. My husband is an active person and intends to stay that way. We have changed our diet and begun a regular exercise routine and his symptoms have all improved, no thanks to this doctor, who essentially wrote him off. We DO NOT recommend this guy.

I reached out to Dr. Spiceland’s team after seeing his positive reviews and after my prior G.I. specialist failed to tell me about a diagnosis he found during my endoscopy (among other issues). They had me forward over my records, which I did. I did not hear anything back after a week and a half, so I reached out to ask for an update. This was the second rude interaction I’ve had with the staff, but I didn’t take it as a reflection of Dr. Spiceland himself. However, The receptionist told me that Dr. Spiceland said “this is clearly a second opinion case, and I will not be taking it on.“ I asked why my case would be considered a second opinion, as my allergist recommended that I find a new G.I. specialist after the issues I had with my former one. She shortly repeated that Dr. Spiceland would not take me on as a client and that she had no further ability to answer my question. I asked if Dr. Spiceland had any referrals, as he said I should “find someone at Vanderbilt.“ She said that he did not. I of course have not seen Dr. Spiceland, but if this is the way that he treats cases, I don’t think anyone should go to see him. The lack of helpfulness and care for patients is clear; don’t waste your time. I honestly would really love some clarity from himself or his team on this, but as of now, I have received nothing. Note that I’ll update the review as soon as they do something on their end.

Could not be more pleased
Like a lot of men, I always put my health on the back burner until I am forced to go to the doctor. Dr. Spiceland had me feeling better within days for a problem that I had tolerated for many years. Going to a specialist was one of the best decisions of my life and I can't imagine there being a better Gastro doctor around than this one. He even performed my first colonoscopy that I had put off for way to long. My only regret about seeing this physician is that I didn't go sooner.

He has a great bedside manner he is very thorough and very caring and considerate!!! I have had hepatitis C for 20 years, he treated me last year, and as it stands right now there is absolutely no detection of hepatitis c in my bloodwork...I would not hesitate even for a moment to recommend anyone with this issue to Dr Spiceland… He’s one of the good ones!!!

Amazing doctor! He really listens to your symptoms and I've noticed that he doesn't just jump into a procedure unless necessary. I like that he is a doctor who will give you options. I will gladly go back to him for any further digestive issues.

This doctor is absolutely amazing. He actually sat and listened to me and did not interrupt me and answered all my questions. He seems very thorough and very knowledgeable with what he does. I would recommend him to anyone who needs a GI doctor
