Dr. Douglas Berv, MD

I came to Dr. Berv diagnosed as schizophrenic. I had been treated in and outside mental hospitals for many years with little benefit. There is a story about Marlon Brando that ends: “He accompanied [disabled veterans] to their favorite watering hole on Ventura Boulevard, where one night a tipsy woman preached that they could walk if they believed in God. Brando rose wobbly from his wheelchair, did a little dance and ran out of the bar yelling, “I can walk! I can walk!” Modulo living for walking, that is what Dr. Berv has done for me. He figured out what was wrong and fixed it. And he has kept it fixed for decades. Without him my life would be very different. He has treated successfully other members of my family and many of my students. Two characteristics of his practice stand out. Dr. Berv does what he does better than anyone else I can imagine. And he cares personally and passionately for his patients.

In 2017 I was at my darkest moment of my life. Dr. Berv brought me back from the abyss I was in. He was thorough and was able to put me on the correct medications He identified my illness with professionalism and care. If I hadn't found Dr. Berv, I don't know where I would be today or even if I would be here anymore. I highly recommend Dr. Berv to anyone that needs a professional caring Doctor.

Dr. Berv provided exemplary care to me. Integrating details from past treatment, my current life situation, and allowing input from close family members, Dr. Berv cultivated a treatment plan that was far superior to any I had previously been supplied. His diligence and dedication place him ahead of many of his colleagues. He has a stellar knowledge of conditions, patient presentations, and he possesses a care for his clients that sets him in a position to most ably treat those seeing him. I am immensely grateful for Dr. Berv's care and his outstanding ability, fine manner, and dedication to getting the best treatment arrangement for my situation.

Physician was unprofessional and continuously tried to push more medication with higher doses despite me stating significant side effects. Although stating my concerns, he wouldn’t listen and insisted on additional medications. He then stated that ONLY women should not drink alcohol because it causes breast cancer “as a fact” despite not providing any resources. His opinion of women drinking alcohol did not interact with medications I was taking and only had to do with my gender. At that moment, I told him I felt he was being misogynistic, he disagreed and said he was stating “the facts” that women should not drink or can only have 1-2 glasses of wine or they get breast cancer. From there I ended my treatment with him, in the 2 years I saw him I’m surprised he did not try to mend, reconcile or apologize for his comments and instead said “fine, find another psychiatrist.”

I have been a patient of Dr. Berv's for 12 years he is a great doctor. Thanks to Dr. Berv my attention deficit disorder is under control and i can live a normal life.

I have been a patient of Dr Berv for over 20 years and he has always been very kind and compassionate. When he first diagnosed me with bipolar I did not think he was correct but I trusted him and followed his treatment plan and I was soon back on track. He was not only concerned about me but always asked about my family and would sometimes share anecdotes about his own. During a recent illness he has again been there for me and helped me through another difficult time in my life.

I have been seeing Dr. Berv for almost 4 years. I am amazed at what he has done for me. I suffer from Depression, Anxiety, ADD and am Bipolar. Dr. Berv was attentive to all my ailments and through medication and counseling was able to bring me around to having a "normal" life. Thank you Dr. Berv.

All I have to say about Dr. Berv is positive. I have had anxiety almost all my life and seemed to have lost control of it in my min 50's after a job change. A friend referred me to him and told me that after 15min he will know exactly what was going on. I was very skeptical and scared. Half way through the secession I looked up and had the feeling he was on to something and I was right. 5 years later all is well and I have no doubt if the situation changes we can adjust things. I have been seeing Dr. Berv for close to four years. He’s consistent and fair. Also always available if need be.

I have found Dr. Berv's help to be inordinately successful for me. By closely following his advice, and sticking to it, I have revolutionized my psyche. Where once I suffered from a lifetime of Bipolar highs and lows (mostly lows) I have achieved a level of mental stability that I have never known before. Racing thought patterns are now behind me, and my depression mood swings are few and far between, especially in recent times. Dr. Berv maintains a close and conscientious monitoring. of my patient care, including successfully advocating important lifestyle changes resulting in dramatic weight loss (140 pounds from my all-time high!). My leaving Dr. Berv's care is only due to my being transferred to Medicare, where my options are severely limited; between good psychiatrists and bad. But such is Dr. Berv's compassion that he HAS offered to take me back as a patient at a reduced rate if my new psychiatrist does not work out. I have already decided to accept his offer should this happen.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Berv for over 20 years. I would characterize him as extremely intelligent, compassionate and very insightful on the multitude of issues he has addressed on my behalf. I have the utmost respect for how directly he responds to questions and concerns I’ve presented him over the years. His widespread knowledge and experience is unique. I can’t thank him enough for the major impact he has had on my life.

Dr. Berv is a great and caring provider. He’s a great listener and his secretary is wonderful too. Can’t recommend him enough.

I’ve been a patient of Dr Berve’s for 10 years. Besides being brilliant, he listens, doesn’t rush, explains things well and answers any questions I have. I am in such a good place and am grateful to have a Dr who really cares about his patient’s outcomes. He’s direct and I respect that. He treated my husband also and was instrumental in helping me during my grieving process when he suddenly passed away. I would highly recommend him to anyone without hesitation.

Dr. Berv is what I like to think of as "a doctor's doctor." He is experienced, thorough and listens. He takes time to explain things and offers articles so you can further your knowledge. He is direct and expects you to follow through with the treatment plan. I am okay with being held accountable. I feel better than I ever have and my relationships have improved as a result. I appreciate Dr Berv so much, that I do not hesitate to send friends to him and I am already fretting about his retirement (whenever that may be).

Beware of any doctor who criticizes or otherwise expresses negativity towards your right to a second opinion.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Berv’s for over 10 years. He is a calm, thoughtful and caring doctor who has been of great help to me and others in my family. He takes the time to listen and asks great questions to get to the heart of an issue and explains why his prescribing certain medications. His diagnostic skills are excellent. We had a situation with a family member who was misdiagnosed at Yale New Haven Hospital and was not doing well on the medication they prescribed. Dr. Berv diagnosed differently and got them on the right medication and they have been doing very well ever since. We are very grateful for all that Dr. Berv has done for my family and I highly recommend him.

Dr. Berv is a phenomenal psychiatrist. I have been seeing him for over a year now and it was the best decision I made to be a part of his practice. Everyone is so nice at the office and always willing to help out when needed whether its to schedule an appointment or to solve and issue. The whole environment there is very relaxing and makes you feel right at home. Dr. Berv makes a great effort to get to know you on a deeper level to make sure that you are properly diagnosed. I knew walking in that I had generalized anxiety disorder; however, there was a part of me that was still off. Dr. Berv diagnosed me with a mood disorder and opened my eyes to a whole new world. Mood disorder is relatively new, and it takes mood stabilizers in order to be treated unlike many other doctors had prescribed me with anti-depressants. I have the utmost trust for Dr. Berv and know that He cares and wants you to feel better. It took almost a year to get the correct combination of medications for me, but Dr.
