After our first appointment, I was hopeful. He appeared to genuinely care. He scheduled me for an EMG after X-Rays and an MRI. I went to him for a surgical consult. I came out with another referral. It was for transfer of care. I guess he doesn't appreciate being questioned. He just left the room. I thought he would be back. Next thing I know the nurse comes in with my paperwork. He washed his hands of me.

Heartbreaking Experience
I hate that I’m even having to write this review as I love UTSW as a whole system, but this doctor does not give a good reflection of UTSW. I recently saw him to have a consult for surgery concerning my herniated disc. Ultimately he refused to perform the surgery on me (which is a decision I respect) but his bedside manner and behavior during the appointment was horrid. He was extremely demeaning and upright disrespectful in the way he talked. He made multiple comments about my weight and lifestyle (all which were assumptions because he did not take the time to ask about my history). The second he walked out of the exam room I broke down in tears from being made to feel so small and invalidated. I’m glad he refused the surgery because after my encounter with him I would never trust him performing any operation on me.

Please get a second opinion after meeting with this Doctor.. I met with him and was informed I would need a laminectomy/disectomy for a herniated disc in my l5/S1 lumbar spine from a fall a year prior and the disc was compressed into my sciatic nerve causing excruciating pain. Dr. Dickson told me ONLY about the risk (possible stroke, spinal fluid leakage and accidental clipping of the nerve) ALSO it could possibly not give me any relief. He gave me absolutely no confidence in him or the procedure. He told me that it would take me 3-6 months to heal and a 1-4 day hospital stay. Leaving there feeling completely helpless, I scheduled a second opinion with another Doctor and was informed that I would only need a minimally invasive procedure that literally takes 30 min under local anesthesia and I could return back to work after ONLY 4 days… This is my first ever surgery put I’m pretty sure assessments shouldn’t be that far off.. PLEASE GET A SECOND OPINION IF YOU MEET WITH THIS DR!!!!!

Went expecting to be scheduled for a spinal fusion but found out it would not correct my condition. Very impressed that Dr. Dickson did not just do a surgery because it was what I wanted. He gave clear reasons for his decision and offered alternative treatment. I was touched when he offered to pray with me. I appreciate being treated like a human being and not a dollar sign.

Had lumbar fusion from Dr. Dickson in 11/16, minimum of 4 of 6 screws are loose causing a tremendous amount of pain, muscle weakness, and atrophy, nerve damage, internal damage, even to this day. In my opinion and in my case, he has been uncooperative, and unprofessional. He told me that he could take all the screws out, but could not correct the situation and support my back. In my opinion, do not let someone care for you who cannot correct their created situation.

Dr. Dickson is a Godsend to the world of spinal surgery. I was severely injured and was suffering immensely. His calm and confident care was reassuring and although my surgery was complicated he and his team performed it very skillfully. He is faithful and his prayers are a welcome part of the healing process. I cannot imagine going through this without him. Thank God.
