I was placed in a situation where getting an additional opinion resulted in this resident retrieving her attending to tell me “there’s too many cooks in the kitchen”. Both the resident and attending scolding me while I was navigating a difficult path to a conclusive diagnosis felt inappropriate. I had a complex autoimmune condition which she had me coming back for repeatedly. Getting a second opinion and sticking with it was the best thing I did. I was not making progress going to back-to-back appointments with her. Not only were my concerns gaslighted but when my swollen lymph nodes were palpated by this physician I was told “thats just cartilage”. I have since had to have those lymph nodes closely monitored with ultrasound to monitor for malignant transformation… These types of experiences press me to encourage others to please advocate for yourselves!
