A blessing
My husband was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in his jaw June of 2022, stage IV. Dr. Carlson and team performed surgery to remove the tumor and bone replacement. My husband nearly died and I feel like God led us to Dr. Carlson. He explains things so it's easy to understand, he and staff are friendly and caring, and professional. Dr. Carlson and staff are a part of our miracle family and we adore them. A huge Blessing to us.

Highly recommended, and now I understand why!
He communicated very well in discussing my diagnosis, and the treatment that I needed to complete. My surgery was successful, and he or members of his staff visited every day until I was released from the hospital. The instructions and advice down to offering tips of what to eat were tremendous and very helpful to me. With each follow up appointment, he and his staff continued to show a commitment to my care as that first appointment. Everything that I experienced with Dr. Carlson was very professionally done. He gave me a lot of encouragement in my time of need as I was under his care.

Gifted surgeon
I have been a patient of Dr. Carlson’s for more than 13 years and have been truly blessed and thankful for being in his care. From our first meeting in his office, he made my wife and I feel that I was in good hands. Having a diagnosis of a cancerous tumor in your cheek that needs to be removed is very scary. As we discussed my options, his calm and reassuring manner helped relieve my anxiety. My surgery went without any complications and the scar is barely noticeable. Dr. Carlson is a gifted and exceptional surgeon and person. Dr. Carlson communicates well with his patients and genuinely cares. He listens to what you are saying and makes you feel confident. At my last appointment, we discussed his leaving. Thirteen years ago he said I would be a patient of his for life. He really means it. I know he will be there in the future for me. I feel he is my physician for life and also a friend. He is a true asset to his profession and calling.

My mom care
Dr. Eric Carlson is simply the best. A great surgeon, a wonderful human being, and the most professional doctor. He saved my mom’s jaw which was infected and very painful needing immediate surgery. My 90 year old mom could have died of pain and suffering if it wasn’t for the quick and effective surgery performed by Dr. Carlson at the UT medical center in Knoxville. He waited late on a Friday night to see us when another doctored referred my mom as a patient with an urgent need. He saw my mom at 6 pm on a Friday night and performed the surgery at 7 am on Saturday. It took little time for my mom to fully recover. His care of my mom after surgery was exceptional. He would come in with his impression team early each morning for days to see into it that my mom was recovering correctly. My mom is doing great years later, Dr. Carlson saved her life. I am a PhD nuclear engineer and own a global nuclear engineering firm in Tennessee. I know the value of emergency response. H. M. Hashemian

Amazing Doctor
Doctor Carlson operated on my wife's odontogenic keratocyst and more recently, my mother's 'jaw cancer'. They both love Dr. Carlson and I am eternally grateful for what he has done for my family. My wife has had a number of bad experiences with doctors and Dr. Carlson is one of only two that she truly trusts and feels comfortable with. Her surgery only took about 4 hours and all was perfect. (A different specialist wanted to have a 10 hour surgery with replacement of jaw bone with leg bone. 10 days in ICU, induced coma and must learn to walk again. Insane!). Dr C. and the team were great. In the years since, we have sent panoramic radiographs to Dr. C via email every year and he generously reviews them so see if the cyst might be coming back. He does this on his on time and without asking for payment. Truly amazing. Not someone in business to get rich.

Second to None
My daughter was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in the mandible at 25. After visiting with other surgeons and getting referrals that led us to Dr. Carlson, to say our experience was exceptional is an understatement. He is the consummate professional, incredibly talented, yet treats his patients with the utmost care. Because of my daughter’s experience, several patients have gone to him from WV. With a very difficult diagnosis, he still managed to comfort and encourage while also being very honest and upfront with her status, which we definitely preferred. After 8 years of continuous care, he will forever be an important part of our life, and I highly recommend him if you’re looking for the best of the best!

Best of the Best
I was diagnosed with Stage IV oral cancer in March of 2022. Dr. Carlson performed a partial maxillectomy in April of 2022 and I've saw him every couple months since. Honestly, i feel like he saved my life! The surgery and everything after went as well as it possibly could! Dr. Carlson provided excellent service all throughout the past 3 three years that I have saw him. I have no complaints and would highly recommend him for treatment. Him and his staff were top notch and treated me with nothing but kindness. I am forever grateful and truly feel like I owe him my life! Thank you!

MRONJ resolution
I Initially saw Dr. Carlson at UT, Knoxville in March 2022 with an MRONJ case. After a second visit, Dr. Carlson repaired it surgically in June 2022, then saw me at several follow up visits. During the process, Dr. Carlson explained his findings and the proposed procedure along with possible outcomes in a way that was easy for me to understand. The surgery went well and at a March 2025 follow up visit, Dr. Carlson said he is happy with the result and further follow up visits will not be necessary.During this entire process, his office staff were both helpful and accommodating.

Horrible surgeon
Dr. Carlson was very reassuring that my mom was in the best care; unfortunately during surgery they lacerated her carotid and she passed away 4 days later. Dr. Carlson denied and could not explain why or what happened. His receptionist was very hateful. I

Did an excellent job in taking out the tumor for my stepfather but he and his residents are not very friendly and I feel like they don't have good bed manners. He seems to always be in a hurry!
