Dr. Eugene Kwon, MD

Dr Kwon is a great guy. Easy to talk to and he knows his stuff. I made an appointment with him about 2 years ago after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that had metastasized in my bones. He gave me hope and confidence (which I greatly needed) then got right to work and put me on an aggressive treatment plan. The plan worked and I am cancer free although I remain on Zytiga and Leuprolide for now. I am very grateful to Dr Kwon and Mayo for giving my life back. I highly recommend him.

When I went to see Dr. Kwon I had just entered the world of Stage 4 Prostate Cancer. Here’s my journey:Prostatectomy in August 21Recurrence 16 months later followed by salvage radiation, also ADT.PSA started to rise again fairly quickly. Found a metastatic tumor on iliac bone. Got SBRT to that.Decided it was time to get to Mayo and see Dr. Kwon. First PSMA scan found 17 tumors from neck to abdomen. All on Lymph Nodes. Dr. Kwon decided on a treatment path, triple play therapy. Chemotherapy of and Carboplatin, Docetaxel, Darolutimide and ADT. Returned home and met with local Medical Oncologist. He agreed to follow Kwon plan exactly. After 4 Chemo infusions I got a PSMA scan at Mayo. 10 of the tumors were gone. Others had shrunk and were less avid. After 6 infusions back to Mayo and Dr. Kwon. PSMA found all signs of metastasis gone. Miraculous!Dr. Kwon does not treat like most other Doctors. He is more aggressive and effective. Dr.Kwon goes above and beyond for his patients. He comes in early to accommodate travelers, works around insurance issues, collaborates with doctors at Mayo and in Ohio, explains pros and cons of each treatment option, and speaks honestly about what he would do in our situation. Over the past five years, he has shown through his actions that he really cares. He often brings out current clinical trial results pertinent to my husband’s disease, and we discuss how we can use the information in his treatment plan. He willingly discusses differing views and gives his rationale for recommendations. He speaks with us, not at us like we’ve experienced with some other doctors. We always feel heard and respected. Most importantly, he stays up to date with all prostate cancer research and trials, honestly voicing concerns over unproven or risky treatment routes. He also makes a point to ask how we are doing emotionally with the treatment. We are thankful that he is our team leader.

I have been under the care of Dr. Kwon for nearly three years and during that time, have developed an enormous degree of respect for his professional acumen, bedside manner, and the entire Mayo Clinic team. I can without reservation recommend Dr. Kwon for prostate cancer and related urologic diseases. In my case, I presented an advanced and complex case of prostate cancer. Dr. Kwon initiated an advanced and, at least at the time, a somewhat unconventional course of treatment that turned out to be extremely effective. (It has since been adopted on a rather widespread basis.). Throught my course of treatment, Dr. Kwon was caring, communicative, and responsive. Over and above his superb professonal abilities, he is a quality person who justifiably holds the respect of his patients, peers, and colleagues. I simply could not have wished for a better experience personally and therapeutically.

My husband has been a patient of Dr Kwon's for the past several years. I've been to all of his appts with him and each time, Dr Kwon has been absolutely amazing. His knowledge and always being one step ahead with the next plan if needed, his constant positive attitude, the way he explains things and answers every question in ways we understand it and more than anything is simply a top notch person. I truly feel he has given my husband his life back after being told at a different facility there was nothing more they could do. I will forever be grateful for Dr Kwon for taking my husband on as his patient and for all he has done for him and our family.

Three and one half years ago I had a PSA of 247 and was in trouble. I secured an appointment at the Mayo Clinic, and was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. I was introduced to Dr. Kwon the same day as my diagnosis. In twenty minutes he laid out a comprehensive plan explaining treatment step by step. There was never a discussion of how much time I might have left. It was clear that his focus was on curing my cancer. Dr. Kwon and his team went to work with lining up my care plan which was an immediate, and forward charging treatment. My last check up showed undetectable PSA, and no detectable cancer. There has never been anything palative about Dr. Kwon's care. My cancer probably will show up again someday. I am confident that when it does, Dr. Kwon and his team will have a plan to attack it again.

I have been seeing Dr Kwon for several years now following my prostatectomy. Dr Kwon's diligence and dedication to my continued clean bill of health is absolutely the reason I remain cancer-free all these years later. I could not have done it without him.

Excellent in All Respects: I have been a prostate cancer patient at Mayo Clinic since 2012. A variety of doctors performed surgery, hormone treatments, radiation, and chemotherapy which held the cancer at bay, but made little progress in diminishing the cancer cells. In fact, by 2022 the cancer reached stage 4, having metastasized throughout the body. Then under the care and guidance of Dr. Kwan I underwent Lutetium-177 radiation therapy, which led to a marked diminishment of all the cancer. Dr. Kwan was a major leader in the use of this therapy. He is well connected, knowledgeable, friendly and down-to-earth. He's easy to talk with and willing to spend extra time explaining things and listening to his patients. From the initial appointment 3 years ago to now,Dr. Kwon has displayed everything this patient could have hoped for in a physician. September 2021 I had been through hormone therapy, immune therapy, and the numbers indicating prostate cancer was evident were not trending in the right direction. I was diagnosed late 2015 and we did not seem, after almost six years, we were making progress. This is when we contacted the Mayo Clinic and were referred to Dr. Kwon. By December of 2021 the trend had changed to a positive direction. The goal of treatment went from maintenance to cure. As of this writing I am clear of cancer. Thank you Dr. Kwon and your team for the compassionate tenacity to get to this point.

When I was 65, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I decided on having Brachytherapy. It was a cure for a number of years. I was told to have a PSA test twice per year. My PSA slowly rose. Finally, my 4th urologist told me my cancer was back, but to kick the can down the road further. His words, not mine. I called the Dr. who did the Brachytherapy, and he said don't do anything. I started reading and found out about something they called Savage Reoccurrence. That was horrifying. After much thought I called Mayo clinic and had an appointment with Dr. Kwon's team in 5 days. That was 7 years ago. They found prostate cancer on 3 different bones, some lymph nodes, my Seminole gland and the back side of my prostate. All this was found and taken care of over a period of time. I would not be here to write this if I had not called Mayo clinic and become acquainted with Dr. Kwon and his team!

I started coming to Dr Kwon 8 years ago when my local well-regarded hospital in the Chicago area told me when my prostate cancer reoccurred that the only treatment they could or would give me was a defensive drug that would hopefully slow my cancer down, but would not attack it. My daughter strongly recommend that I not settle for that answer, so my further research lead me to Mayo Clinic and Dr. Kwon. Not only did he successfully treat the initial reoccurrence, but my prostate cancer reoccurred several more times and he has treated each new reoccurrence with new methods of treatment that very few other hospitals would have tried.I have only the highest respect for Dr Kwon and his team and I am thankful to God that my treatment is in their hands.

I'm in my 50's and had my prostate removed at the Mayo a couple of yrs ago, I fly to Rochester quarterly from South Florida for testing even though there are hundreds of cancer centers (where you’re really just a number in a revolving door of 1000’s of patients) in close proximity to my house. When it comes to my family and my life, I want the #1 care in this country and that is what I get with Dr. Kwon and the Mayo Clinic, a nonprofit organization. A little known fact that most patients may not consider is that unlike the Mayo Clinic, most doctor’s offices (at least in my case, I’ve seen it repeatedly) do not employ professional associates that work exclusively with the insurance companies to handle claims and get approval for testing on the latest equipment. If you want an aggressive fighter by your side along with the best possible care, you have to go with Dr. Kwon and his team of experts. I am very fortunate to be a patient !

I would highly recommend Dr. Kwon and his team for anyone with prostate cancer. I was 77 years old with prostate cancer that had metastasized when I applied for treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. I was assigned to Dr. Kwon and his team. Unlike what my previous urologist had prescribed as prolonging my life with hormone therapy, Dr. Kwon asked if I wanted to enter his care team program that could stop the cancer growth and a good chance to cure the cancer completely. My care plan would be chemotherapy followed by radiation treatments and continue with the hormone therapy treatments. Now after 3 years under Dr. Kwon's treatment plan, there has been no cancer cells showing on my PET scans and no detectable PSA for the past two years. I stopped all hormone therapy one year ago. I have Stage 4 Prostate Cancer. Dr. Kwon has saved my Life!' After 11 Surgeries, He recommended 7 weeks of radiation, 18 weeks of Chemotherapy, and I get a Testosterone lowering Shot every 3 Months, 2 Abiraterone Pills, 2 Steroids daily. I have had my diagnosis for 14 years, my initial prognosis was less than 3 Years. He is an expert in treating men with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer!

My husband was diagnosed with cancer in his early 50’s and had his prostate removed at a local hospital. Soon after his PSA again began to rise. His doctor wanted to radiate the prostate bed.
