Dr. Velayos failed to put me to sleep during my colonoscopy and endoscopy procedure. I feel traumatized. I've been refusing having a coloscopy for more than several years no matter how bad I feel because of being awake the entire procedure that I had with Dr. Velayos. I never bothered with a follow appointment because I despise Dr Velayos. I have zero trust for any IBD doctor now. I would never recommend this doctor for anyone. This is a 100% honest and true review of my experience with Dr. Fernando Velayos.

Dr. Velayos gave me confidence in the excellence of his medical skills and also his softer patient skills. He is encouraging in the face of a lot of complicated and related possibilities, which is reality, I think, for a lot of GI symptoms. He is fact-based and scientific, and ordered all tests needed, and the therapies he recommended (for different problems over the years) worked when years of treatment from other doctors hadn't.

  • Listened & answered questions
  • Explained conditions well

I met with Dr Velayos while having a flare of IBD. He refused to run a diagnostic blood test due to insurance costs (even after I said I would pay out of pocket), offered limited solutions, and when asked what new medication he recommended, he suggested a treatment that had already failed me. I had ensured he had my full history in his chart, but he had obviously not read it ahead of time, nor took the time to ask me what I've tried before. Also note, UCSF does not allow switching specialists.
