Excellent Orthopaedic Doctor for the Spine
Dr. Phillips is not quick to perform surgery. He listens to the patient's concerns and problems and explains treatment and options well. He is very thorough.

Great doctor with great results!
I was having lower back pain and shooting pain down my leg. I could hardly stand or walk for more than 5 minutes. After Dr Phillips performed the laminectomy I am now pain free. I would highly recommend him as a doctor!

Rushed Appointment
The only reason I’m giving two stars instead of one is because Dr. Phillips Physician’s Assistant was attentive and asked all the right questions. Dr. Phillips on the other hand, was basically rushing me out of the door. It seems like he was no longer interested after learning my condition didn’t require surgery. According to him, “he likes fixing necks”. I guess since mine didn’t require a surgery, I couldn’t get more than 5 minutes of his time after waiting for almost an hour. As he was leaving , I essentially begged him for a referral to see a pain specialist as he was walking out of the door. I understand he is a busy man but it doesn’t hurt to show respect and empathy to your patients.

2008 Cervical Surgery and 2023 Lumbar Surgery
I had a cervical spine surgery with Dr. Phillips 15 years ago. I was in constant pain, and the surgery eliminated my pain. I recently had a second surgery with Dr. Phillips. I could not walk. Sleeping was difficult. Non surgical interventions did not eliminate my leg pain, so it was time to consider surgery. Dr. Phillips takes a conservative approach to surgery. I was confident that he would recommend the least aggressive surgery to address the issue. He recommended a two level surgery with a fusion at one level. I knew I was in good hands. Post surgery, the PAs quickly e-mailed answers to my questions. One month after surgery, I had many more good days than bad. Five months after surgery, I walked 10 miles. I am thrilled that I can hike and bike again. Dr. Phillips is a leader in the area of spine surgery. His intellectual curiosity and drive for better outcomes with shorter recovery times benefits his patients. I am lucky to have Dr. Phillips as my surgeon.

5 yrs after microdiscectomy, still 99.9% pain free
It's tough for me to say 100% pain free, but realistically, that's where I'm at. I get soreness every now and then, but I think I'd have that no matter what. Having the microdiscectomy surgery with Dr. Phillips about 5 years ago was one of the 5 or 10 best decisions I've ever made in my life. His staff is wonderful, Rush is wonderful, and I had zero issues with his 'bedside' manner. And the most important thing was that he was able to cure my daily excruciating agony. I would double over in pain while pushing a cart through Costco. I sometimes had to pull off the road to get through a pain episode. I got my active lifestyle back - hockey, running, weight training, etc.

Heartless
Unless Dr. Frank Phillips is the only orthopedic surgeon in your area, I would not recommend him. Dr. Phillips gave me hope during my first and only visit with him. I came in barely able to move my neck. I was in so much pain. He acknowledged that this was all due to the bulging discs in my neck and the cushion having worn down, which he saw through my MRI scans and x-rays. He prescribed me medication, physical therapy, and referred me to another specialist to get a shot in my neck. He said if I found the treatment plan to be a waste of time after trying it for a few weeks, to call him so that they could get me into his office sooner than our scheduled 6 week follow up appointment. At that point we could talk surgery options. A day before my appointment, I received a phone call from his physician assistant. He was cancelling my appointment. He said my dizziness was a neurological issue and that I should see a neurologist. There was nothing that he could do for me. I was so confused.

Bad experience
Saw Dr.Phillips because of his numerous reviews. His assistant came in,got my information then I went for x-rays. Came back to the room and waited. Dr.Phillips arrived and didnt say hello, how are you, or anything. He asked where my 6 month or more recent mri or x rays were at. I told him I didnt have any and when I made my appointment I told his office I didnt have any and they told me it was fine because he would order his own. He then told me he looked at my x ray and could see my problem wouldnt require surgery and he was specifically a surgeon. He told me to do physical therapy for 9 weeks at 3 times a week and that he would pass me off to a pain specialist. I asked for an mri, surprisingly he wrote me an order. Fast forward a week, I got my mri and I have a badly herniated disc and now hes interested in seeing me again after my physical therapy. I will never see this doctor again and have never been treated so poorly at midwest orthopedics or by any specialist. Total time 10 min.

He is amazing I’ve had 3 spinal fusions. He has a great team of PA’s who get back to you in lighting speed. His team is outstanding, they operate like a symphony. Dr. Phillips is clearly a brilliant surgeon but has a great sense of humor, really understands what you are up against and is just a great guy. How can I say this? It’s a tough combination. I would recommend him and his team to anyone for the most difficult cases. I’ve been with them for 7 years and I can’t imagine not having that team in my ongoing issues. Joan

Surgeon Frank Phillips gave me a great and comprehensive second opinion for a pending neck surgery. He certainly seemed to be honest, forthcoming, and his skill level is difficult to match. Given his long and successful history with disc replacements I will certainly be utilizing his skills in order to gain the best outcome possible for my specific injury. I will be sure to review the outcome as well once I am fully recovered… So far I would suggest Surgeon Frank Phillips for anyone considering Cervical (Neck) disc replacement. As I do not believe there are many Surgeons that have more experience or better outcomes.

Dr. Phillips gave me my life back. He was my third surgeon in 3 years. Should have started here but lived out on the east coast and was a patient at HSS. He's nice, courteous, timely, concerned and practical. Everything about the experience was excellent including my outcome!!

2 years ago Dr Phillips fused my lumbar and literally gave me my life back after 4 specialists turned me away. More recently I broke my C2 in an accident. While some doctors warned me I would lose all sides to side motion Dr Phillips was able to perform the procedure and still give me a reasonable amount of motion. He is nothing short of amazing.
