Pre- and post- right knee TKA surgery
I recently underwent right knee TKA surgery at HSS. Dr. Fred Cushner performed the surgery. He was masterful with computer assisted medial approach to the knee wherein he was able to go underneath the quad muscle to gain access to the joint. His surgical technique was exquisite. After discussions with Dr. Cushner, I opted for the Persona IQ smart knee prosthetic. The app and exercises that were recommended to me because I had the smart knee significantly increased compliance to exercises and propelled my well-being. My recovery at 6 weeks post -surgery has been gratifying. I made to Dr. Cushner's follow up appointment at HSS from NJ by train and subway. Dr. Cushner and his team were engaged and responsive before and after the surgery. He and his staff called me immediately when I had questions post-surgery. Committing to physical therapy pre-surgery also helped a lot. My wife also had arthroscopic knee surgery by Dr. Cushner. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Cushner.

Dr. Fred Cushner is an AMAZING PERSON & DOCTOR. He never judges his patients by a textbook. But as a person and treating their medical conditions. He goes above and beyond for his patients. Always puts my mind at ease. When I am worried. I suffer from severe rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. He did my total knee replacement on my left knee April of this year. I know that my right knee needs to be done soon. And Dr Cushner would be the one I pick to do it. I am very blessed to have him as my surgeon. When so many doctors didn't want to treat me. Or suggest I go out on complete Disability. But he did and kept his word on making sure I would be just fine. Just trust him. I have a daughter that is about to graduate from high school soon. And Dr Cushner has given me hope again. Were I would be able to sit and stanc at my daughter's graduation. In the past I wasn't able to go to my daughters performances at her school. But I can say come June 2024. I will be able to go to my daughters graduation. Anc see my daughter walk a cross the stage. DR. CUSHNER THANK YOU. YOU ARE A TRUE BLESSING FROM GOD.

Dr. Cushner is a great physician and person
I was referred to Dr. Cushner from my physiatrist who recently left St. Louis to work at HSS in NYC. I was having terrible trouble recovering from my bilateral knee replacement because I needed my patellas resurfaced. My surgeon in St. Louis would not agree to do it so I went NY and had a consultation with Dr. Cushner. Dr. Cushner immediately saw the problem and two weeks later, I had my left patella resurfaced at HSS. The surgery was successful so I decided to have the right patella resurfaced two months later. Now my challenge is learning how to walk correctly with two working knees! Dr. Cushner and his office were wonderful to deal with. They were responsive when I needed post-op support; they were great listeners, and were respective of my needs, concerns, and questions. I highly recommend Dr. Cushner if you are in need of an orthopedic knee surgeon. Hi

Great doctor, great hospital
Dr. Cushner performed a total knee replacement on me 18 days ago. Not going to lie, the first few days were pretty terrible, but that is just the nature of the surgery. Dr. Cushner was extremely thorough, answered any and all questions, and made me feel at ease. Although this is a low risk, routine surgery, it doesn't seem that way when it is your knee they are operating on. As a young patient (only 50), I was hesitant about going through with replacement, but I am glad I did it, and thrilled with the entirety of HSS. It was more like a concierge service than a hospital. You would push the button in the hospital room, and someone was there almost immediately to help you. He is concerned about the recovery and your pain as well. I have to have my other knee replaced as well, and there is no doubt about having Dr, Cushner do the surgery and doing it through HSS.

Excellent outcome TKR
I am 8 weeks post op from Total Knee Replacement with Dr. Cushner and the whole team at HSS. Dr. Cushner has a great demeanor and always takes his time to answer any questions. A real pro. If you are going for TKR, there is absolutely no reason to go anywhere else. I could not be happier with my surgical outcome and progress. I am already back to full range of motion and am steadily getting my strength and endurance back in my knee. Dr. Cushner and his staff were always available to answer any questions or concerns that arose after the surgery. Overall, a very positive experience and would recommend Dr. Cushner and HSS to anyone looking at this procedure

Dr. Cushner Changed My Life
I needed a new knee and the surgery was particularly complicated because I already had a plate and five screws in my tibia from an injury eight years ago. In one surgery and one incision, Dr. Cushner removed three screws and implanted a functioning knee. It's only been 4 weeks and I'm already more mobile, in less pain, and have a gait that's taken the stress off my back. I attribute Dr. Cushner's skill as a surgeon to the fact that I'm recovering as well as others I know who've had much less complicated knee replacements. I was familiar with high quality of care at HSS because two of my grown children had surgeries there. There's always anxiety before having a surgery like this, but what I never worried about was the surgeon or the hospital. I know I still have more work ahead of me, but I'm confident I'll be enjoying more activities than I've been able to in the last eight years. Dr. Cushner was recommended to me and he's the doctor I would recommend to anyone else.

The surgeon without the crystal ball
Dismissive, did not follow up after surgery, total knee replacement failed shortly after implantation, when asked reason for failure, Cushner said " I don't have a crystal ball to determine the future, and didn't care to fix the issue. I found out that the implant ( Smith and Nephew) was recalled few years afterwards

Before I met Dr.Cushner I went to see 7 other Doctors from NJ to NYC including Dr. Padget from HSS. They were all knowledgeable and very direct with the information they gave. However not all of them had the proper bed manners or remembered what they said on previous visits. And for sure none of them had time for any questions or dialogue to the before, during and after the total knee replacement surgery. Some of them were a little arrogant, It is an invasive surgery and you need to be comforting, and humble for your patient. My knee surgery has been a success from beginning to end.I just completed my 2nd year from the date of my surgery. My knee and scar is unbelievably amazing. The are no bumps and no uneven marks. I have seen so many other peoples scars and mine is amazing compared to theirs. This man is a miracle worker with the patience of a saint. I was truly blessed when I found him. I would recommend anyone and everyone to go see him if you have any knee issues.

I'm 70 years old and have had a lot of Docs over my lifetime. Dr. Cushner is one of the best. He treats his patients with respect and empathy (even post-op worry worts like me). I had no cartilage in my right inner knee for five years and was getting along on gel shots. Then last October the knee would buckle. Dr. Cushner evaluated and advised I had three options (explaining each well): do nothing, partial knee replacement or full knee replacement. I selected partial replacement. I am now four months post op and couldn't be more pleased with surgery, post-op guidance and pain management, PT and recovery. Dr. Cushner's staff (both medical and administrative) routinely go above and beyond to ensure patient's concerns are addressed 24/7. I am for all intents and purposes back to full functioning. Yesterday I climbed 10 flights of stairs and back down without any issues. I can also do a 100 other little things (empty front load dryer, scuff shoes on door mat, etc.) without pain.

I saw Dr. Cushner for non-operative treatment in 2018. He ordered injections for me and recommended physical therapy after a thorough exam. He gave me a follow up appointment just so I could have more questions answered. It's only since moving to California and experiencing the horrible medical treatment out here that I've realized how good Dr. Cushner is. If you are in New York feel lucky that you can see someone like Dr. Cushner.

I grew up in New York and anytime you needed orthopaedical care you always think of the Hospital for Special Surgery first. I am 62 years old and called them about my right knee which had been giving me trouble for several months. I was referred to Dr. Fred Cushner M.D. who from the beginning assured me of success in getting me back to where I wanted to be. He explained all of my options up to and including surgery. After trying these other options including synvisc gel knee injections, we decided on arthroscopic knee surgery on September 25th. I had the surgery in the a.m. and was out by late afternoon. After 10 weeks of recuperation, I can say it was the best decision I could have made. I am able to bend the knee and drive with no pain. I cannot thank Dr. Cushner and his team at HSS enough for my extraordinary care. A special shout out to two of Dr. Cushner’s team Michael Palataro and Sina May, I hope I got their names right.
