Not recommended
Dr. Kefer promoted Urolift to me, describing only the possible benefits and not the potential pitfalls. In particular, he neglected to inform me that the presence of the Urolift clips in my prostate would eliminate the usefulness of MRIs in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer (which I now have).Sure, you can still get a prostate MRI. But the Urolift clips block the view of most of the prostate in the MRI image. So what would normally be a valuable tool to help with identifying suspicious areas, targeting biopsies, and locating nerves in advance of possible surgery, has been rendered useless because of the Urolift implants. Regardless of the Urolift MRI issue, I would not recommend Dr. Kefer to anyone. He is condescending, he thinks very highly of himself, and he does not listen to what you have to say. And your only way of dealing with it is to talk to their call center, where they know nothing about you.

If you have cancer, stay far away from this man.
Like others have said, he's cold, condescending, and definitely has an ego. He might be an amazing surgeon, but stay FAR away if you have cancer. He told my husband he can 'cure' him, before seeing any scans. When it came back Stage IV, inoperable, he didn't even care. He said 'we'll treat this right up with a med, see you in a month' No explanation whatsoever of what we were up against. We asked if we should bring an oncologist to the team and he lied and said 'You're looking at him' Nothing in this man's credentials, even on the website itself does it say he has experience in Advanced Cancer. He never answered us back in the portal and when he did actually call, you can tell it was always inconvenient for him. The whole office has issues, but he definitely has horrible bedside manners. We lost sleep for weeks being this man's patient. So happy when we left.

Waste of Time and Money
When I first met with Dr. Kefer I had a clear diagnosis and recommended surgery (sling) from my surgen. Instead of accepting this he went off in the weed for six months of appointments and alternative treatments which did absolutely nothing. I finally went to another eurologist who schedule sling surgery on the first day and solved the probem immediately. After all this go around I mentioned during a Prostrate Cancer support call in Denver that I had a long delay in getting treatment thanks to a Boulder Dr. Two people on the call guess immediately that it was Dr. Kefer. They both had similar experiences - lots of appointments and no real addressing the problem.

UroLift Procedure
The UroLift procedure did not work for me. It never reduced urgency orfrequency. No change at all from before procedure or after procedure Dr. Kefer told me there were no guarantees. He was right.

Distant and does not care
Dr. Kefer is surely a talented surgeon. But he has a cold bedside manner and does not seem to value individual patients. This practice treats patients like numbers in a big machine, and uses a call center to hide from their patients and save a nickel. Look elsewhere. I did not have a positive surgery experience and am dealing with complications.

Worst doctor ever.
Rude and condescending. Rushed through the appointment and offered a totally absurd diagnosis, as confirmed by more than one subsequently seen other urologist, and then suggested a procedure that would have made his practice a lot of money but which would not have benefited this patient in any way. Again, this has been confirmed by other well qualified urologists. Office staff is also rude and incompetent. Stay away!

Wonderful Doctor
Just celebrated the 4 year anniversary of my radical proctectomy performed by Dr. Kefer. This is my sixth year under the care of Dr. Kefer (2 yrs under active surveillance, 4 years post op). Dr. Kefer is a fundamentally great human being with exceptional clinical and surgical skills. If you are considering prostate surgery, I know the associated stress and concern. The side effects of the surgery for me have been non-existent and I remain cancer free. I have much gratitude for Dr. Kefer, he totally exceeded my expectations.

The best Urologist/Surgeon you could ever choose!
I had a radial Prostatectomy last August and here I am almost 1 year later. Dr Kefer and I had thorough discussions and he set expectations across the board before my surgery to make the best and most informed decision. I am 60 yrs old and this cancer and surgery was a HUGE deal and decision. Dr Kefer's specialty in research at Cleveland Clinic was in the area of micro dissection of nerves. He gave me huge confidence that he was an expert in this area and would preserve practically all of my nerve bundles. And any urinary control issues would be short lived, and with robotic surgery my recovery time would be quick. I want to share that he exceeded my expectations in EVERY area. This type of surgery requires serious expertise and your outcome is 100% a function of the doctor/surgeon you choose. I can say unequivocally that Dr Kefer is the best urologist/surgeon you could ever choose for this surgery (or any other procedure). You are in excellent hands and you should be worry-free!

Saved my kidney
Dr.John C. Kefer is an amazing surgeon, he removed a large Malignant neoplasm from my right and only kidney. There was no guarantee he could save my kidney. Dr.Kefer said he would do what ever possible to save my kidney. The surgery was around 6 hours longer than first thought. The tumor was larger and more difficult to remove. When I woke up in recovery and my son told me he saved my kidney, I was so happy. He really saved my life. Dr.John C.Kefer is a Amazing Dr. and a Amazing Surgeon. If you have any problems with your kidneys I recommend Dr.John C.Kefer he's the Best.

I highly recommend Dr. Kefer if you’re considering prostate cancer surgery. I’m now 6 weeks removed from the surgery and am very pleased with the results. All biopsies during the surgery came back clean, and my one month PSA is undetectable. My “male function” returned almost immediately after surgery (more on that below) and continence has largely returned, with more improvement to come. I chose Dr. Kefer after interviewing several other surgeons, including at Mayo. He convinced me and my family that he had the expertise and game plan to get me a great outcome, and I believe he delivered. My sense is that he’s developed some fairly unique techniques, which he couples with a passion that convinced me and my family that he will fight for the best possible outcome. And unlike most doctors, he has a sense of humor. When I told him my “male function” had returned 3 days after the surgery (with the catheter still in), what was his response? “That’s your fault, not mine.”

Dec 3, 2021 - Follow-up visit to remove Foley catheter after radical prostatectomy on Nov 2, 2021. My prostate had grown to the size of a large navel orange. Dr. Kefer is an exceptional Urologist and did a meticulous job during surgery adroitly navigating around nerve bundles affecting penial function. Slight incontinence is the only side effect of this procedure so far. His staff should also be commended for the excellent job they did throughout the ordeal and continued medical care post-op. If you are considering surgery, you would be in the best possible hands. I give my highest recommendation for Dr. John Kefer and his entire practice.

Since my medication was no longer effective, Dr. Kefer recommended the UroLift System as a solution for my BHP issue and the procedure was performed on November 2, 2021. A few weeks after the procedure, I had noticeable improvement and can now travel for 4 or more hours before needing to stop. I used to get up 5-6 times per night and now I am down to 1-2 times with an occasional full night sleep. I am told I will continue to see improvements over the next several months. This is like turning the clock back 15 or more years and I can't wait to see the full effect of the procedure. The joy of having a strong stream again!! A special thanks to Dr. Kefer and his excellent team.

Dr. Kefer has been my urologist for about 4 years. I am not the easiest of patients as I have a low pain tolerance, and become very anxious during procedures. Dr. Kefer has always been kind, patient, and attentive to my specific needs. He takes great care to ensure that procedures are painless. I have heard terrible stories about prostate biopsies and bladder scopes. In the capable hands of Dr. Kefer, my experience with these has been painless and uneventful. I trust Dr. Kefer, am grateful for his patience and kindness, and of course, trust him because of his outstanding skill.

I'm 69 years old. I had prostate cancer. Consulting with Dr. Kefer we decided it was best to remove my prostate. He fully explained everything and I was comfortable with the decision. Six weeks ago, surgery went exactly as described. I thought having a catheter for 10 days would be horrible, but it wasn't too bad at all. Very little discomfort or pain. Well worth it. I'm now cancer free, PSA <0.1. My urinary control gradually got better. I can now stop flow completely when I feel I need to, and leak a little once in a while, during a sneeze, or something like that. It is getting better almost daily. I am dry overnight. I would expect full control soon. It's only been six weeks. I have full nerve sensation and sensitivity. I have also gotten, more than once, a full erection. I'm not really experiencing any loss in stiffness. No kidding. I think if I have any problems with that in the future, it won't be because of this surgery. Dr. Kefer is a great and skilled doctor.
