So much for The Hippocratic Oath: First Do No Harm
My wife has had a fever for over 21 days after going to the Crestwood ER we were referred to go to Dr. Voelkel. Upon calling his office we were told that our health insurance was not accepted. I explained to the staff that we have an Health Savings Account HSA which means that we self pay unless the cost of service exceeds our deductible of $10,000. Our deductible amount sits in an HSA account until we need service. She informed me that because we had an HSA that we fall under a second class structure no insurance class and would not be seen for months. I proceeded to ask if I had blue cross blue shield would I be seen sooner and the answer was yes.I pleaded with her that my wife really needed to see the doctor. She said, 'Unless I was willing to wait 3 months for a cash pay appointment they would refuse to see us.'So much for The Hippocratic Oath: First Do No Harm.

CARING DOCTOR
I really do like Dr. Voelkel! He is my husband's doctor and he did my husband's colonoscopy, but at the time, I was with another doctor at the same practice. My doctor then retired, and Dr. Voelkel became my doctor officially yesterday upon my first visit. He is fun and easy to talk to, informative, and caring. The best thing I have experienced with him is that he does not rush his patients. He takes the time to talk to you and doesn't mind answering questions. He was the same with my husband as well, which is why I chose him after my doctor retired from the practice. I would recommend him to anyone!

Patient receiving colonoscopy and part of his team
Dr. J-P Voelkel is knowledgeable, caring and kind to his patients and their families. In full disclosure I worked with him, as a RN at the bedsides of his critical patients in the ICUs of Crestwood Hospital from 2012-2016. I am also old enough to be his mother/aunt. I used his expertise personally for a colonoscopy and appreciated his efficient team. Christy Bradley Teachout, RN, BSN, MS, FNP, Nurse Practioner-Certified in Alabama

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Dr. Voelkel is fantastic! He has a great personality, and when I told him the co-pay was expensive for the bowel prep he ordered for me, he actually gave me a free prep. I really appreciated as well that he took the time to go over everything with me, including discussing my family history and the procedure. All turned out well too! I recommend him to everyone!

my dr had tested for gluten intolerance. But when Voelkel tested me, he was happy to tell me I was not gluten intolerant. It seems that a person who was avoiding gluten would not test positive for gluten in a blood test. Now if I had been eating gluten, I would have tested positive. when I eat gluten my stomach swells big time and I get constipation.

He is an awesome provider that takes time to listen to his patient. He was able to identify specific issues that I struggled with in regards to my medical condition. Very grateful and thankful for the care/empathy he demonstrated during my visit. Will most definitely and highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a great GI Specialist.

I love Dr. Voelkel but scheduling is such a headache. If i didn't like him as well as I do I would definitely change just because of the problems with scheduling. It took me two days of repeatedly calling and leaving messages to get anyone to call back. His nurse wasn't even considerate enough to call me. I had a situation I needed to inquire about before driving at least an hour only to be turned away. When I was able to speak to someone she had an attitude and talked to down to me she knows who she is and if I had her name would report her. Finally late on the 2nd day I spoke to the office manager. Hopefully this will get resolved

I had no problem with Dr. Voelkel. However, I did have problems scheduling my appointments because every time we scheduled one in the Huntsville office, I got a letter the next day re scheduling it for Madison. I should not have to travel more than twice as far to see a doctor when he has an office in Huntsville.

I've been seeing Dr. Voelkel for a long time, and I think he's great. His bedside manner is terrific and he answers all my questions to my satisfaction. He is one of those rare doctors who is willing to say "I don't know" when he doesn't know something. One of those rare doctors who is willing to then research and learn about things he may not know. I wish more doctors were like this! He's helped me fight ungodly nausea, diarrhea, C. Diff, etc. over the years and I very much trust him.

The staff are difficult if not impossible to get on the phone. The Dr. is not friendly and speeds you through the consult as fast as possible. He only does local anesthesia colonoscopies on Thurs afternoon so you have to fast for almost 24 hours. BCBS won't pay for a fully monitored anesthesia colonoscopy and he is in cahoots with the hospital to get more money out of you.

Rushed and quite condescending. Please stop referring to females as my dear and no dear, that's ....; how about using a professional, yet still appropriate, yes, ma'am,? Patronizing your patients does not garner trust, my dear.... Your patient load is too high- take a bit more time- you are noticably distracted, and quite dismissive.

Aug 26, 2015, I underwent a colonoscopy performed by John-Paul Voelkel, MD. I was briefly awakened from sedation & told he'd punctured my colon & was being taken to Crestwood Hospital, Huntsville, AL, for a small laparoscopic repair. Awoke in ICU after 5 hours surgery, minus the first HALF A FOOT of my colon & newly installed colostomy bag w/surgical ostomy, PLUS a pulmonary embolism. Not enough space for details. My medical bills exceed $228,000 to date. NO, I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS DOCTOR.

I am young elderly, and had my second colonoscopy administered by dr. Voelkel. I have a history of bad anestistis recovery due COPD. Everything with my first and second colonoscopy was completed successfully, and I recommend dr. Voelkel, and crest wood hospital in regards to any digestive disorders, or digestive preventive care.
