He should be fired! No stars!
Last night my 75 year old dad drove himself to the Winchester Valley Health ER because he was having a lot of trouble breathing. It was so bad you could hear that he could hardly pull in air. Triage was great and he was back in a room quick. It took 3 hours to see the doctor. This doctor laughed in our faces when we brought up concerns about mold recently found in my dad's shower that has caused us to have to remove the bathroom floor. After 6 hours the doctor still hadn't given us any test results and only came in the room once. Then this happened! After 6 hours he returned, we had to ask him to provide results and after I explained that my mother almost died once when all of her tests were normal because she was being poisoned by carbon monoxide and the doctors relied only on her pulse oxygen levels. He then told me, no that's not what happen, I know because I'm an expert....This turned in to a full on argument. I will be writing a letter concerning this experience.

Horrible Doctor
I was seen at VHMC last night & came in via ambulance due to chest pain, vomiting & severe dizziness with very high blood pressure. I had been here before & ALWAYS received exemplary care...until I met this "doctor". I am a proudly recovering addict with over 21 years clean & this man decided to play God and judge me with his rude comments. Acting like I was drug seeking, asking me if I was "SURE I hadn't used recently." Lol. My broken back requires a small dose of opiates, to which my pain control physician monitors very closely. He tried to force a mask one as I was vomiting so "he didn't get thrown up on." Dr. Shanabrook was insulting, condescending & also found it necessary to belittle me looking at my scars. This man doesn't belong in patient care as he knows nothing of the oath he took. I walked out AMA & he also had the nerve to tell me to come back if I got worse. My advice? Leave if he's there. VHMC is amazing & the care one usually receives is excellent. What a shame.

If I could give negative stars I would. I have a very complicated health history & was having unusual pain at an 8 or 9. I’m used to pain, but this was different. He told me I have a pattern & I’m drug & attention seeking & that I should look into mental health problems. He refused to give me nausea let alone pain medication unless he found something “surgical or life threatening”. I have severe PTSD & it was triggered that night. I have had doctors ignore my concerns & end up in comas more than a few times. I was afraid this was going to be a repeat. We just moved so I haven’t had a chance to get a primary doctor set up. He told me that should have been set up weeks before we moved. I’m sorry, but that’s not possible since insurance changed. He also did an Unnecessary I&O cath Honestly, unless you were in an accident or KNOW that you have something surgical, if you go to the ER here and he’s on, just leave, he won’t help you. & will make you feel like you’re an awful person.

When I came in to the ER (my primary Dr.'s office advised me to go in for my symptoms), Dr. Shanabrook was the Dr. Who saw me. He was very friendly at first, especially with other staff in the room but once they left, he was more judgmental and jumped to conclusions about me. He also stated he wanted to send me home "so you (me) can fix your own problems". I thought this was extremely insensitive and unprofessional. I came to get medical help, I'm aware of how to care for myself. I've been sick for some time and he just didn't seem to want to believe it. He also ordered an MRI for which I still cannot schedule because the order was wrong. So I'm waiting to hear back about that.

He is one of the rudest doctors I have ever seen! I stated my history to him which he either said he was knowledgeable in/completely dismissed it. I have never seen a doctor that instantly views you as drug seeking if you take pain medications. He advised me to find better doctors Due to pain meds. Also had me submit to a I&O cath for a tox screen I never knew about. I am now suffering with a UTI or flare up of my condition. He also tried "avoiding" coming back into room. Request a new doctor!!

I am a type1 diabetic, also a bilateral amputee. I was hospitalized for cellulitus of the left knee and was told to come back in a week if the swelling did not go down. I go back to Valley Health Medical Center 7 days later. Doctor Shanabrook was on call and came in to the room i was in and wass the most rudest person ive ever met worse bed side manners ive ever delt with. I recommend that if you are seen at WMC and hs is the attending doctor to ask for another doctor.
