Probably an excellent surgeon but a terrible human
I saw Dr. Zhao for a urinary stricture that I’ve had for years. I couldn’t recommend him less. He lacks any human empathy and is, in totality, the stereotypical arrogant robot surgeon. I’m sure he’s an excellent surgeon, but so are others. As it stands, Dr. Zhao was the push I needed to leave NYU Urology and find a new urologist, since I would only be punishing myself by continuing to seek medical care there.

Uncaring
I had been a patient for several years and had a surgery scheduled that was cancelled without explanation and with short notice. Patient relations kept stating the office never said they wouldn’t treat me, but Dr. Zhao’s office said the opposite. It seemed that patient relations forced him to have a final appt with me - he was demeaning and unhelpful. I have a complex case and feel I was abandoned. Dr. Zhao was not able to refer me to anyone who could take on my case. It’s been years and I still have not been able to get the issue that they could correct taken care of. Up to this point I was happy with the results and surgical care being a long time patient. The “end was in sight” as far as getting to a good place medically and it felt like he ripped the rug out from underneath with no true explanation why, remorse or alternative options. The emotional, physical and financial cost of his actions has severely impacted me.

Horrible in every way. Staff is incompetent and doctor is unprofessional, rude and negative. I spent three weeks trying to transfer three previous surgical reports to him ahead of my $300 telemedicine appointment. In spite of assurances from his secretary that all was in order, I found out from his nurse at my appointment that none of my records arrived as I was told. Dr. Zhao kept me waiting for an hour after rescheduling the time of my appointment the morning of only to speak to me for ten minutes dismissively without looking away from his computer or looking me in the eye. His prognosis was unnecessarily depressing and inconsistent with opinions I have received from other surgeons. He suggested I deal with compromised organ function for the rest of my life and did not seem at all sensitive or empathetic to the 30 years of pain and suffering I have already endured. If you believe the health issues you are supposed to treat are "funny" than perhaps you should switch careers.

The very best. Dr. Zhao performed a complicated reparative surgery on my son, a young man, over 6 months after a near fatal car accident, and after my son had an unsuccessful procedure with a skillful surgeon in another state. My son is restored to health and we are profoundly grateful. I cannot fathom the one negative review I have seen for him, because we found him to be not only brilliant, but also compassionate, articulate, kindly straightforward, and, particularly considering his circumstances, he conducted himself with humility. We found all his team members to be excellent as well, superstars in their own right, extremely focused on my son's well-being and very responsive. Considering Dr. Zhao's demanding schedule, including much international travel disseminating his expertise, I would have forgiven him for being rushed and abrupt, but that was not our experience at all. We are convinced that no one, anywhere, could have done better, and our entire family is forever grateful.

As a Registered Nurse I do not give out praise freely because I personally know the medical system and have dealt with good and bad physicians. Dr. Zhou was recommended to handle my moms unique bladder issue and having him as our physician was a complete pleasure so I had to write a comment. Not only is Dr. Zhou an expert in his field but he has a warmth when he talks to you. He is patient, kind, and knowledgeable. When my mom had a common and unavoidable complication he came into the hospital personally to evaluate her even though it was on a Sunday and he wasn’t scheduled to be in the hospital that day. Not only is Dr. Zhou a pleasure but every on his staff was a dream to work with too from his secretary Felicia to his Resident Dr. Shakir. We traveled from another state to have Dr. Zhou as our physician and will continue to travel to see him if needed in the future.

2 hour wait, saw me for 3 minutes; dismissive and rude. Disregarded everything said by referring doctor, told me to come back a month later to see his assistant, who also did nothing. 400+ dollars down the drain.
