Dr. Maria Cristancho, MD

Dr. Maria Cristancho is wonderful!! I visited her office today for the first of several appointments to help in the management of severe pain from two broken ribs, and just her demeanor has made me feel better already. She is professional, kind, competent, thorough, and she listens. Moreover, she doesn’t have a godlike attitude that too many doctors seem to have today. For more than a week, I have suffered through excruciating pain. Every movement hurts. I cannot sleep a full night without waking up screaming and God forbid I sneeze or cough, as it is a pain that is indescribable. The two ER doctors at two different facilities basically told me that it would be another few weeks of the same and that I would just have to deal with it and push forward. Conversely Dr. Cristancho is really the first to suggest treatment through nerve blockers, whereas one of the two prior doctors only suggested that protocol as a treatment of “last resort” and the other made no mention of it at all. Although I understand that different doctors have different methods, it would have been nice to know that it was even an option. Thankfully, I am aware it is an option now, and although I am psychologically hesitant to have it done just because of the idea of putting needles in my back, I feel totally confident in Dr. Cristancho’s recommendation and her abilities.

Dr. Cristancho is personable and appears to be knowledgable in pain management. She is also overly conservative and requires patients to abstain from critical heart medication prior to procedures. For example, she would not perform an epidural injection because I had not abstained from medications (80 mg aspirin) for a full week. I had epidurals in the past and I never had to abstain from meds for so long and put myself at risk of cardiac arrest or stroke. Moreover, another doctor in the same group did not require a week long abstention from aspirin. For this reason, I would not recommend her.
