Dr. Matthew Chiarello, MD

In January 2021 I had uterine artery embolization (UAE) at Lennox Hill though Mt Sinai in NYC. My only symptoms were bulk and frequent urination. Dr. Chiarello was the fellow and the one performing catheterization. He used radial access but unfortunately couldn’t figure out arterial access to the uterine artery and ended up injuring my lower back. I was awake and watched him ask Dr. Lookstein, the primary IR for the procedure, for help. I had never had back issues, let alone pain, prior to UAE. I ended up with recurring lower back pain and now need to figure out the treatment plan. After failed UAE I ended up with a successful myomectomy performed by a brilliant team of doctors. My recovery was phenomenal, nothing compared to my experience with UAE. Be very careful with interventional radiology. It’s not necessarily less risky than surgery. Like with any procedure the outcome depends on the skill of the doctor performing the procedure. I would not recommend this one.
