Unfortunate
I took my 9 year old grandson in to be seen for his collar bone fracture. An X-ray from an ER 10 days previous showed it. Dr Hofkens said it was likely just a dislocation. The updated xray showed changes on the xray taken this day when compared to the previous. He started 'I'm very surprised'. Dr Hofkens was convinced that this child would let pain be his guide for treatment...even though he was told that the child fell the previous day off of a slide with his sling on and is not doing well with restrictions. We asked for more direction but were told that HIS child, and most children, would not be doing that, so he expected my grandson to be the same and let pain be his guide. When asked for more direction, we were ignored. He was just dismissive, and placing my grandson in what he should be doing, not WHAT is reality. If you are looking to be treated as an individual, don't see Dr Hofkens.

Do not recommend this doctor
I do not recommend this doctor. I have no question Dr. Hofkens is a highly knowledgeable of his area of expertise. What he possesses with his expertise he lacks in decorum. In his presentation to me he came across as smug, arrogant and demeaning. Dr. Hofkens seemed more intent to persist to lecture than to provide care. His visit yielded no care. Dr. Hofkens contradicted his own colleague who after their review of my results communicated 'multiple abnormalities' and had recommended I see Dr. Hofkens. Dr. Hofkens did not address his colleague's statements. and claimed no problems. I can not recommend a doctor who does not indicate compassion and care for a patient.

Not very understanding
Dr. Matthew Hofkens was very rude to me and my daughter. He force me to lay down forward on my side which I’m afraid that I’m going to fall due to my frozen shoulder and he force my daughter to lift me which she explains that she couldn’t be able to due to back pain and he force her. He was very mean and he rude. It wasn’t a great visit at all.

Great advice, amazing knowledge
I've seen Dr. Hofkens for a number of years and he has always given me helpful, professional advice about exactly what is causing my current problem and how to respond and build my strength. I'm an overweight older woman but because my goal is always to maximize my ability to be active, he always supported that without judgement. He also connected me with an amazing physical therapist. When my husband blew out his knee skiing, Dr. Hofkens gave him exactly the advice and surgical referral that he needed. I strongly recommend him for anyone who is willing to do the work needed to recover from whatever their challenge is.

Lacking Courteous Bedside Manner
I saw Dr Hofkens for hip and knee pain. He doesn't listen or care about my pain. He just a it's all from being overweight and not taking into account other health issues. He also does not believe anything that my primary doctor diagnosed. He does not believe in taking pain medicine or believe in medical conditions like gout or bursitis.

It felt like Dr Hofkens wanted to get me out of the door as soon as possible. He did not seem to listen or figure out potential solutions to ongoing problem. Condescending and arrogant appears to be general attitude even when he makes the mistake, he can't be inconvenienced.

Dr Hofkens has been seeing me for a hip problem for almost 2 years and he has been amazing. Extremely upfront, explains everything as much as I want, very good bedside manner, etc. He will tell you like it is without being unkind.

I saw Dr Hofkens for a knee injury 5 weeks after falling on ice. He was condescending and rude. Told me I sit on my butt too much. Meanwhile I work on my feet all day and had thyroid cancer, which is why I am a little overweight. He decided I am lazy before he even talked to me.

Dr. Hofkens carefully listened to my concerns and paired me with an excellent physical therapist. Through a program of targeted exercises, I was able to improve my condition and find a regular routine to help me address an ongoing issue with great satisfaction. I would highly recommend Dr. Hofkens to anyone who is in need of a smart, compassionate physician and who is willing to do the work themselves. I found it to be a great partnership!

My issue was knee pain during/after exercise. Dr. Hofkens reply we need to lose weight! Yes I am, however, exercise causes severe knee pain that wakes me up at night and hurts to walk. He advised, We need to push through the pain and lose weight. In my opinion he displayed arrogant condescending behavior. Women Beware!
