I am not one to write reviews, but this was an exception…Dr. Smith was a godsend – prayers answered. In excruciating pain and unable to walk or stand, I was at wit’s end trying to get my medical issues resolved locally. My PCP recommended Rothman. In search of an appointment for a neurosurgeon ASAP (distance didn’t matter), I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Smith the next day.At the appointment, I immediately felt comfortable with him. He listened, reviewed my MRI, was understanding of my pain and inability to walk due to a major disc extrusion, and offered me a quick resolution. In a matter of days, he performed a laminectomy, and I was given a Miracle in Manhattan. Within hours of surgery, I was able to stand and walk without pain! I still cry when I talk about it!Dr. Smith is extremely skilled and professional – yet kind, caring, and compassionate – everything you would look for in a doctor! I must add that his nurse & office staff are top-notch too!

I have seen Dr. Smith twice with neck issues, once after an MRI and once after a CT scan. He was very precise in his explanations, and did not recommend surgery. He did recommend physical therapy and keep an active lifestyle, including gym workouts, to keep my issues to a minimum. Dr. Smith is an outstanding clinician.

Dr Smith performed a lower back laminectomy in 2023 and ACDF surgery in 2024 on me and I would not go to anyone else! He explains the procedure well, is empathetic, honest and experienced. His staff are also the best. He is conservative and will suggest PT and pain relief meds before surgery. My nerve issues are gone thanks to Dr Smith.

My experience with Dr. Smith and his team seems like a fairy tale but all of it is true. After suffering for two months with severe back and leg pain, Dr. Smith rapidly diagnosed a herniated disk that was pinching a nerve (clearly visible from the MRI) and he knew exactly what needed to be done. He actually said I could have the surgery the next day, given summer holiday schedules and all, and his amazingly helpful and professional team went into overdrive which allowed me to check into the Kimmel Pavillion that night, to be operated on the very next day. My back and leg pain were history, and my recovery from the surgery was relatively quick and aided greatly by PT and nurses from Revival. I was able to fly to Europe for a business trip some eight weeks later. It felt very good to be able to recommend Dr. Smith to a questioning flight attendant, and I can’t recommend him highly enough.

I highly recommend Dr. Michael Smith. The spine is no joke, and the prospect of having it operated on is terrifying. Dr. Smith thoroughly explained the reasons for my pain and carefully walked me through the procedure in his calm, assured, “you’re in good hands” way. His team, Mackenzie and Dana, are top-notch. When it became clear that serious issues with my back were beyond the help of physical therapy and pain management, my husband and I talked to several highly recommended surgeons. One dr. recommended Dr. Michael Smith which brought me to Rothman. I needed a double lumbar fusion to prevent permanent damage, performed at the Kimmel Pavillion at NYU Langone, an unbelievable facility. Dr. Smith consistently performs his procedures with the same experienced team consisting of Dr. Quirno, who initially recommended Dr. Smith and Mackenzie Cooke, PA-C, also of Rothman, among others. I was also put in touch with Dana Schlossberg, BSN, RN, ATC., the clinical assistant to Dr. Smith, very knowledgeable answering all my questions. Appointments & updates about your visits are sent via text or email. Entering the super clean office you are greeted by a friendly staff with short wait times. Dr. Smith himself is down to earth & professional explaining my injury & surgery. Follow-up visits exemplified more of the same describing the healing process in a manner that patients understand. Since my surgery in March '23, follow-up visits have remained exceptional for this duration.

Dr Smith is the champion of doctors. He was able to diagnose where the source of my pain was coming from and did my surgery. I can't thank him enough for him helping me reduce my pain! I would recommend him to my family or anyone who needs a highly gifted surgeon. Dana and McKinsey are wonderful too and are extremely supportive when I reached out to them. Thank You!

I had Back surgery with Dr Smith, on August 1st, that was totally successful. Dr Smith was very informative and professional with a wonderful demeanor about him. Additionally, everyone that I met on his staff were excellent. I highly recommend this very skilled doctor.

In a matter of weeks my mobility and quality of life completely fell apart due to spinal and nerve issues. After months of suffering and various doctors and treatments failing to provide any relief I was lucky enough to be referred to Dr Smith. I had spoken with other surgeons and his outlook on what needed to be done was less extreme than others and the estimated recovery time was in turn much shorter. I am so thankful for what he did for me. He provided the procedure I needed without going overboard with added unnecessary things being done and had me completely back to being myself within such a short period of time it seemed like a miracle. Saw Dr. Michael Smith at Roman Orthopaedic Institute today. I must say, this office could conduct seminars and be paid as consultants to many professional service providers for how to get it right. From the initial check-in to the x-ray to the intake to the internist and then doctor -- followed by what felt like my own personal health concierge nurse -- it was incredibly impressive. I trust Dr. Smith implicitly for the way we discussed my concerns. He was neither an advocate for surgery, nor against it. It was very clear that he had my best health and wellness outcomes in mind as a priority.Highly recommend!

I have gone to countless specialists to relieve my nerve pain. My health journey felt like it was going in circles as none of the treatments were working. It wasn’t until doctor smith took the time to properly examine me that he discovered a spinal fusion surgery would be the best route. This is the first time in 3 years I am finally living pain free. The entire experience from my first visit, through surgery to after care, has been an amazing experience with Dr. Smith and his entire team. I was suffering with lower back issues and left side acute nerve pain from my hip down through my foot. After a long course of PT, pain management and acupuncture, nothing was really helping. After getting an MRI and consulting with Dr. Smith, we decide to go for a surgical solution - an L4/L5 laminotomy to take care of advanced stenosis and some other clean up work for a couple herniated discs. Recently My father had spinal surgery at NYU with Dr Smith . Everything was perfect, From the very first phone call to the hospital experience and the follow up visits. Dr Smith is kind, takes his time with patients and most of all is an incredible surgeon. His nurse Dana and his PA Mackenzie are beyond amazing. So smart, helpful knowledgeable and patient. His office staff are so helpful and kind as well. The hospital stay at NYU was equally as great. My father is pain free and has his life back!
