Excellent Surgeon
Dr Patel is brilliant and an outstanding surgeon. He spent plenty of time with me to explain my spinal surgery and results were successful. He is genuinely a nice person with a ready smile. I highly recommend him!

I had a very good turn out with my surgery
He explain what was going to happen with the surgery. This was a revision of my prior surgery that never helped me. Even right after the surgery he preformed, I felt so much better. His whole practice was very helpful for me. They kept my primary care physician informed every step of the way.

Worse treatment ever
Has made me jump through hoops for months, while being nothing but condescending and rude. Writes notes on my patient file, that are not even what was said in the appointment, it feels like he is covering his own butt. Refuses to listen to me about MY pain and just dismisses me. I have dealt with the same back pain issues for the last 10 to 12 years with multiple health issues on top of it. Dismissed my concerns about ending up in a wheel chair or falling and causing more damage, put in my notes that surgery was not “mandatory or required”, when it is, that is the only reason for seeing him. He is using BMI as a basis for surgery instead of the quality or lack there of, of life that i have. I came to him because i was told UofM was the best place for my issues, when that infact is not true. He just tells me im too fat and to work with the nutritionist he sent me to, who told me to eat MORE because i wasnt getting enough. If he read the notes, he would know that.

I went to see Doctor Patel after 3 previous lumbar fusions over the previous 3 years with no relief. He performed surgery 12 weeks ago and I am back to normal now. I would highly recommend Doctor Patel.

I had an indirect spinal fusion operation. Everything went well. The U of M staff was polite and efficient in both pre operation and post operation. The operation resolved my issue with no complications.

Before my operation, pain prevented me from walking or standing for more than few minutes at a time. Within a few weeks after the operation, I was walking for 30 minutes with no problem. Dr. Patel and his team were very patient with answering my many questions, explaining what was going on with my spine, and what they would do to correct things during the operation.

Dr. Rakesh D. Patel came in on Sunday 11/8/2020 as I just suffered an L1 Burst fracture. He was calm, professional and put me at total ease. He said he was going to make "good as new" and he was true to his word !! He is an amazing doctor. The BEST. Words cannot express how much I appreciate him (and the entire U of M staff). If you need anything more from me, I will be happy explain my Nov - July experience at U of M. Nothing but 5 star all the way. Greg D. Balan, Flat Rock Michigan 248-568-2801

I have had scoliosis since I was a kid, with Harrington rods put in at 12 years old. My spine continued to curve and cause pain, locking up, making it difficult to work. No other surgeon wanted to work on my back since I already had surgery. Dr Patel made a plan and did surgery extending my rods to my pelvis. I am 3 months post op and feel GREAT! I no longer have pain in my back and can move around easily. Would recommend him to anyone!

Dr. Patel and his staff gave me excellent care. Way beyond what I ever could have expected. I am so grateful I was referred to him by my pain doctor who said he was the best. Considering how well I am doing after a big spine surgery, I agree. Really cares about his patients.

Dr. Patel rescued me from agony. In 2020 I could not function I was in so much pain. I could only crawl. He was realistic about what I was going through and what I could expect. I had a very extensive multilevel spinal fusion surgery. As a nurse I was impressed that I had extensive surgery and came through it with no neural deficits.

Dr. Patel did my spinal fusion with cage three months ago and I have been pain free from day 1. Before surgery, I was in extreme pain and barely able to walk or stand. Immediately after surgery, I was pain free. I can’t thank Dr. Patel and his team enough for giving me my life back. I would highly recommend Dr. Patel and his team.

The procedure I had done took bones out of my neck and put rods and screws in. Considering I was quite attached to those bones, the level of pain caused by their removal was quite extreme. I did NOT feel like my pain was managed at all. I could not sleep for the 1st 28 hours after surgery due to my pain level. Despite repeated calls from the very dedicated nurses taking care of me, the “doctors” (not sure if Dr Patel or residents/students) did not seem to have a remedy nor really care that I was in a great deal of pain and unable to sleep for over 24 hours after the procedure. Beyond the immediate pain management, the full results from the procedure are still unclear as I’m still recovering and receiving treatment.
