I was very impressed with Dr. Berkman and feel he knew exactly what my problem was and how to treat it. He did seem to be in a hurry though.

Highly recommend
After almost 2 years of being bounced around from one specialist to another, I was referred to Dr. Berkman for low back pain. He quickly identified the problem from an MRI and referred me to have facet injections. I had been begging the Pain Clinic for the same injection which I had been denied.

Vanderbilt Spine Institute
Three weeks of acute pain with no action. Took seven days for my MRI to be read. Was looking at another two weeks for followup. Staff is slammed and can’t come up for air. Communication is horrible. Time to go elsewhere!

Dr Richard Berkman is the 5 star neurosurgeon that Nashville has ever seen. He's so involved in making you completely understand what your diagnosis and treatment is. He is always patient/doctor attached. He stays in contact with you and is always present in your follow-up apps. He doesn't ghost you like others (Logan) does. I have been his patient since 1999. He has never disappointed me in his professional life and again I can't say enough how he stays present in every aspect from day one to current surgeries.

Needed emergency surgery. He stopped his whole practice and meetings and rushed me right to surgery. I have done fantastic for many years.

I love Dr. Berkman. My back was extremely damaged from lots of hard physical labor since childhood. Dr. Berkman was caring, anxious to share my test results with me and listened to my concerns and needs. I have had 3 surgeries by him over the years to correct failed laminectomy (by another doctor).

Just TERRIBLE! He never spoke about my back pain, the future prognosis, the possible treatments....and so forth. Was told a micro-minimally invasive disc disectomy was not a procedure. Spoke about Sports, his past personal relationships, and my teen daughter's life. It was the worst specialist appointment I ever had. You go and expect answers and hope. I received none of that, just a prescription of Gabapentin which is a new controversial medicine that I threw away. Stay away, and go to a Doctor who cares about patients and not his ego.

I came from Alabama to see Dr Berkman over 2 hour drive and it was well worth the drive. He is very down to earth and takes the time to explain things to you. It would be nice if more doctors would be like this maybe then people would not be so frustrated with the medical field. Thank you Dr Berkman for helping me explain my condition. His staff is just as nice and helpful

I was refered to this doctor. I never saw the doctor but saw his "assistant". I was having back pain. His "assistant" would not order xrays and prescribed only physical therapy. This pain got worse so I went to see another doctor who did order an xray and perscribed anti-inflamitories. I found out that I had a compression fracture on the L1 verterbrae. My advice to you is steer clear of Vanderbilt Medical Staff.

When I met Dr Berkman he was very polite and well spoken. I trusted him right away. He kept at it until he found what was supposed to be my problem. I had surgery but I'm still experiencing pain. I'm left with no answers to why that is and I'm about to seek a second opinion unfortunately. My experience with his assistant is she is rude and uncaring!!! I don't know if I would recommend Dr Berkman or not!! I'm still having pain after surgery!!!

Dr. Berkman has excellent credentials, however, the only time I saw him was when he came into the exam room and shook my hand and told me who he was, then left. Dr. Berkman's assistant however was extremely rude on both visits, did not care to have you explain any symptoms, and seemed to only want to tell me and my fiancée how highly educated she was. She also was very argumentative when I was explaining problems from my past treatments, because once again, she knew more than anyone.
