Dr. Gillespie performed robotic hernia repair on me and I was able to be up and walking standing straight less than 12 hours after surgery! My recovery has gone beautifully and he is the most compassionate, caring doctor I have ever had the privilege of meeting. I felt as though he saw me and what I was dealing with instead of making me feel like I was just another patient. I was his patient and it mattered what I said, how I felt, what my concerns and questions were and he took the time to hear me and answer my questions. I am 47 and had lost my faith in our medical system until I met Dr. Gillespie. I would recommend that anyone who has the need for hernia repair, take the time to meet Dr. Gillespie and his team.

Anyone having an issue with a hernia must schedule an appointment with Dr. Gillespie. It is a must. I had the amazing experience of being seen by Dr. Gillespie 3 times: at a pre-Hernia operation visit, at the Hernia operation; and the post-operation visit. At each time, Dr. Gillespie displayed a truly wonderful ability to show compassion at my discomfort, the communication skills to discern and identify the appropriate level of explanation for my questions, and yet also have truly remarkable surgical skills. Often, someone experiencing a great surgeon is left with putting up with arrogance -- and that is a very acceptable thing with surgery. The surgeons I've experienced at Dignity at St. Joseph show that it is possible for a world-class surgeon to be a truly caring person. I feel very lucky that Dr. Gillespie was willing and able to help me.

I had a very complicated hernia with ostomy involvement. He took 10 hours out of his day to slosh around in my insides to correct the problem. Then I needed up with an obstruction that needed fixing which took him just a few hours and minimal surgery. Anyways, it’s been a terrible mess but he was there to explain the problems and had excellent ideas to fix them. Sadly my body didn’t cooperate. He takes more time than expected during our appointments. Highly recommended.

I'd recommend Dr Gillespie to anyone considering surgery. He is honest and compassionate. I never thought I'd care about that, but he treats his patient the way he would his family.

I was referred to the Hernia Clinic at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix by a surgeon in Bullhead City AZ, where I live. My situation was a very large incisional hernia. After my husband and I met with Dr. Gillespie, we scheduled surgery for January 10, 2024 to repair my hernia and also do an abdominal wall reconstruction. A robotic procedure was scheduled. After finding out it would be a 7 hour surgery, I was nervous for sure, but after talking with the doctor and reviewing his experience, I felt confident with going ahead with it. Dr. Gillespie and his team are wonderful and very caring. This was a non-invasive robotic surgery and considering all that had to be done, I was blown away that I felt no pain afterwards and was mobile the next day. All I can say is thank you to you and your staff, who checked in on me on a daily basis. It has been a month since surgery and I have had no negative results. My body is healing well and I can get on with my life. My greatest appreciation!

While I’ve been exceptionally lucky, not having had that much experience with hospitals and surgeries, I found it very interesting that Dr Gillespie had real-time discussions between himself, his PA and their intern there in the examination room. I felt a bit like a back-row auditor at med school as they discussed my case, his diagnosis, and the surgical procedures that he was recommending. Way better than Chicago Med!The procedure itself - robotic-assisted laparoscopic hernia repair - went perfectly, I’m told, and I’ve just completed Week Four of recovery. While I remain committed to “doing nothing” for six weeks, I am virtually pain-free and haven’t taken any opioids or analgesics at all for the last five days. I am forever grateful that Dr Gillespie delayed surgery for six weeks, allowing the pain and inflammation from the initial trauma that caused the hernia to subside, otherwise I would have been recovering from both the injury and the surgery at the same time.

As a physician myself, I have a sharp eye for great physicians. Dr. Gillespie is among them. One should never aspire to be a 'teaching case' (medical jargon for a difficult case), but I was such a teaching case. Dr. Gillespie's expertise gave me an outcome that far exceeded my realistic expectations. More than a year of pain—gone! It was a huge bonus for me that he is also cheerful, compassionate, and communicative. Be sure that Dr. Gillespie will well-serve your surgical needs.
