This Neurosurgeon gave me my life back!
My issues I didnt know I had because TCO had been treating me for hip bursitis! Which was a misdiagnosis! After being bedridden by TCO due to 6 mths of pt and a cortisone shot I had so much electrifying pain down my back buttox and rt leg, I couldnt sit on a toilet! I cried & screamed in extreme pain every day for months until I needed to go to the ED via ambulance & beg for help! Yes beg! Until my RN got pain Dr Emmel to see me, which led me to Dr Kovanda & his asst Allissa. The hospital orth. team said Nope to the hip bursitis. Dr Emmel after an MRI review discovered with Dr Kovanda & team that my L4L5 were causing me the extreme pain. To be exact; Lumbar radiculopathy, Spinal stenosis of lumbar region:Pain in right lower limb. Spinal shot allowed me to go home on RX oxy. My surgery was set at Abbott. Dr Kovanda spoke frank with me. He was honest, Allisa his asst was at my side daily! 4 mths now Im walking! pain is a 1-2 if any! In PTatCK is amazing, helpful ThkU Dr!

On November 8, 2020, Dr. Kovanda performed emergency surgery (craniotomy) on me at Abbott Northwestern hospital for a large brain hemorrhage (subdural hematoma). I then spent six days at Abbott, mostly in the intensive care neurology unit, frequently unable to talk or properly move my right arm and hand. During this period, Dr. Kovanda, his staff and the staff at Abbott, in spite of the many covid restrictions, communicated well with my family and gave me excellent care. At my initial follow-up appointment with Dr. Kovanda, he was again very friendly, provided a great deal of helpful information and answered the many questions my wife and I asked him. A month after my surgery I could talk, reason and function normally in every respect. Five stars aren't adequate to express my gratitude for the care you all provided - you gave my life back to me.

Came across as a much more liberally treating physician than most. Post op only reviewed the orthopedic aspect of my recovery at the 4 week follow up appointment. When I attempted to explain I was experiencing increased, unresolved pain but 1 out of multiple symptoms felt better he stated "well you need to go back to work" when I hadn't even brought up that aspect yet. Then proceeded to state that I can go back to work with absolutely no restrictions despite the fact that I am a nurse and that could put me in a position of lifting 200+lbs patients right off the bat at returning to the workplace environment. I was made to feel like I was being unreasonable for asking for restrictions that allowed me to ease into work so I wouldn't end up exacerbating my condition. I followed his orders and now I'm left with severe pain, worsening depression (pain induced) and crippling muscle spasms. For a neurosurgeon he only addressed the orthopedic aspect and nothing with the neurological aspect.
