Get a surgical opinion from Dr Tomas Martin
You must get an opinion from Dr Tomas Martin before proceeding with any major cardiothoracic surgery. He will open your eyes to making an extremely well-educated decision about proceeding with surgery or not. He informed me of the minimal risk of this surgery for a person with a healthy heart and I was surprised to hear I was not in that healthy category. He highlighted the many cardiac and pulmonary issues I was dealing with, most of which I was not aware of. He explained in significant detail the problems he would encounter with a replacement of my aorta and the significant potential for post-surgical quality of life issues such as debilitating stroke, possible life long dependence on a breathing apparatus or lifelong kidney dialysis. He compared and communicated the minimal risk of doing nothing vs. the significant probability of a bad quality of life after surgery. As a result of this meeting, we decided to live with my aneurysm and not proceed with this very risk

My mother's cardiac surgery at Shands.
Dr. Martin operated on my mother years ago at Shands Medical Center. My mother was referred by HealthFirst in Melbourne, FL. The cardiac surgery did not go well. My mother was left on life support. Dr. Martin informed my family immediately after the surgery that he was tired and would see us in the following morning to discuss the procedure and next steps. We never saw him again. We were told by staff the following day, he had left for vacation. My mother stayed in CICU for the next several days and died on her birthday the following week. One week after my mother's funeral service, Dr. Martin called to explain to me what went wrong with the procedure. He also explained why certain types of life support equipment needed for my mother were not available during her tenure in CICU. These heart related life support machines were all being used by other patients at the time.I personally, would never use Shands or Dr. Martin. Shands is exempt from any litigation by FL law.

We are blessed to have met Dr Martin
My husband had an aortic aneurysm (along with a blood disorder, HHT, that makes him high risk for ANY surgery). He also has chronic pulmonary hypertension. We live in south Florida and I was fearful that my husband would not survive such an intense procedure. By God’s Grace we were steered to UF Gainesville, and, thru a series of meetings with caring physicians, we were put in touch with Dr Martin. He explained everything to us, drew diagrams , etc. We knew we were making the right choice in having Dr Martin perform this surgery. His ‘team’ (especially Kevin!) was wonderful as well. Thank you, Dr Martin & team!

He performed surgery on my daughter when no one else would. He prayed with us and he became an instrument in Gods hands to see the miracle in my daughter. I would suggest him to anyone.

At age 62 I had a Septal Myectomy 6/21/17 . Before the Operation Dr. Martin with my family said a prayer for me for a successful operation, it made me feel at ease a that I was in good hand. I was out of the hospital in 7 days and walked over a ½ mile days later. Back at work 5 weeks after operation. And soon was riding my bike to work 1.5 miles almost every day doing maintenance work. I thank God for Dr. Martin and his team. My pressure gradient was over 95 and now at about 20 and doing good ??

Dr. Martin is a truly amazing man. He is a God send. He saved my husband’s life. While other surgeons would not operate on my husband Dr Martin agreed to do so. He explained the procedure to my husband and even drew diagrams. We will forever be grateful to this amazing and humble man. May God bless him always.

Thank you Dr. Martin, for helping my mother. It's a bit of a long story, however it was nothing short of a miracle the way God orchestrated the events so Dr. Martin could be my mother's surgeon. It was as though God knew she needed Dr. Martin and He took the wheel to make it so. Mom had ascending and descending aortic aneurysms and also double bypass during surgery. Dr. Martin and his staff have been amazing, helpful and compassionate. Dr. Martin is truly the best in the country.

Dr. Martin saved my life one year ago. This physician explained the procedure and made me feel so at ease. He is the most humble and caring doctor I have ever met and I have met plenty. I am a nurse. I went into what should have been the scariest day of my life without fear because I knew I had the best surgeon out there. His PA Kevin is probably the smartest PA I've ever come across. He is just as kind and gentle as Dr. Martin is. I thank God for delivering me to this wonderful man.

My husband and I both felt like God had lead us to Dr. Martin... My husband had less than 1% chance of making it through the surgery and yet we found peace, trust, and complete confidence with Dr. Martin and his staff. Dr. Martin change 3 valves and repaired the forth. Dr. Martin is clearly the BEST at what he does because he knows God is in total control and we are all BLESS because of HIS mercy...

THANK YOU Dr Martin! I honestly can not say enough good things about my experience with Dr Martin, his staff as well as Florida Hospital. You made me instantly have hope again Dr Martin. I'm a 45 year old firefighter and had an aortic bicuspid valve replaced and an ascending aortic aneurysm repaired and I'm looking very forward to going back to full duty as a firefighter as soon as possible. You truly are my hero Dr Martin. If you are a potential patient you are in the right place!

I was referred to Dr. Martin by my cardiologist, to evaluate my need for open-heart surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm and a bicuspid aortic valve. Dr. Martin was meticulous in explaining everything and took the time to answer each and everyone of my questions. I never felt rushed and he made me feel very much at ease with his detailed explanations of the procedures. My open-heart surgery was a success. I am now 4 months post surgery and I'm regaining my health back. I'm now enjoying life!
