Great Caring Doctor
Dr. Tjong recommended physical therapy for my knees first. I went to the Northwestern PT team and received PT. I felt I needed additional treatment and Dr. Tjong provided alternatives, and ultimately I received a shot in my knees. The shots were not painful and will help with my walking and traveling. I appreciate her listening and making herself available. She and her staff respond to messages on my chart immediately. I strongly recommend her.

Don’t recommend at all. Was pt for 2 yrs with worsening hip pain she said was from herniated disc, but her back injections didn’t help. In frustration got a 2nd opinion mri showing labral tear in hip (after she said I didnt have one and updated mri not warranted). Then got stem cell injection from her that did nothing. Physical therapist said I was being misdiagnosed and referred me to Rush Hospital Ortho who quickly did 2 surgeries - for severe grade labral tear in hip & for sciatic neurolysis & ischial bursectomy in low butt/hamstring (was never my back like Tjiong said). I am finally pain free. I wasted 2 yrs in pain, her not listening & many appts where I didn’t see her just her PA. At Rush surgeon saw me every appt & was quick to identify 2nd issue of sciatic nerve but nowhere near my back like Tjiong said. If you have hip issues, go to Rush, see Dr Shane Nho - he is amazing & gave me my life back after yrs of Dr Tjiongs care doing nothing. I am so grateful to him

Hip patient – Jun 11, 2021

Dr. Tjong performed two surgeries in 2019 to repair labral hip tears in each hip and correct femoroacetabular impingements in each hip. These are not simple surgeries, as far as surgeries go. The post-operative recovery experience was exactly as communicated. It took 12 months with significant physical therapy (multiple times a week for 9 months), but in the end 100% of the debilitating pain was eradicated and full hip functionality in both hips was restored. Her team was available for all questions during the recovery process and was very helpful. While I agree with other reviews that Dr. Tjong might have a more stark bedside manner, I didn't seek her out for a comforting shoulder; I sought Dr. Tjong out because she is a highly respected and competent surgeon who is among the best at what she does. I would highly recommend her for anybody seeking hip repair and correction surgery.

I would NOT recommend Dr. Tjong. There seemed to be a major disconnect and an extreme lack of care on her part. She misdiagnosed my issue. After symptoms were not improving, she repeatedly told me to, “wait a few more weeks.” I was in so much pain that it was impossible for me to wait at all for help and that seemed to mean nothing to Dr. Tjong. I saught a second opinion outside of Northwestern and was properly diagnosed and treated.

Dr. Tjong treated me for a posterior shoulder dislocation. At my check up, she had me go through several exercises to test the shoulder strength. The last exercise she requested involved placing my arm in an awkward position at which point she pushed causing an audible crunch / snap and an immense pain. When asked what she did and why, her answer indicated that she was unaware that my dislocation was posterior - she had not reviewed my file. I left the appointment in worse shape than I arrived.

Dr. Tjong was very thorough and patient in communicating with me from my first visit all the way through my post-op visits. The surgery she performed went well, too. I felt well cared for with Dr. Tjong as my surgeon.

When I see a specialist, I assume two things: that the doctor will 1) provide clarity about my health problem, and 2) make treatment recommendations based on her expertise. Dr. Tjong made no diagnosis about my knee problem, and said treatment was really "up to me." "You could get an MRI," but "you could try PT instead." I tried PT for a month. It didn't help. An MRI finally revealed a torn meniscus. Could have been treating the actual problem all along if she had been more precise & professional
