Strange Zeal About Near Beer
Telehealth
Early in my sobriety, I was working with Dr. Davis on a number of issues including checking in about my sobriety. Instead of being supportive about my decision to move away from heavy drinking with the use of 'near-beer,' Dr. Davis regularly went out of his way to tell me that I was not 'truly' sober, because the less-than-1-percent alcohol in my near-beers was, to him, a violation of sobriety. He didn't seem to care that the near beer doesn't make me yell at me wife. Near beer doesn't make me wreck my car. Near beer doesn't make me yell at my dog for laying in the wrong place.I was engaged in a healthy harm reduction behavior and Dr. Davis made me feel so bad about it that I nearly threw up my hands and started drinking again — if the doc doesn't see the hardest thing you've ever done as progress, what's the point? I'm now nearly 1 year sober,Dr. Davis was more interested in judging — and passing down his holier-than-thou judgements — than helping.
