He received his bachelor's degree from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he studied biochemistry and drama. He received his medical degree, with honors, from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, in Hanover New Hampshire. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
