After finishing a cardiovascular surgery residency at Tokyo Women's Medical University in Tokyo, he came to the US to continue his cardiac surgery training and complete fellowships in heart transplant and LVAD at Texas Heart Institute, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Columbia University. Dr. Kaku's focus is in coronary revascularization, heart transplant and LVAD surgery.
