He returned to Shreveport where he earned a medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport, serving his internship and residency at the same institute. After establishing his practice at WK Pierremont Health Center, he opened WK Eye Institute in 2003. Dr. Shelby performs all his cataract surgery at WK Eye Surgery Center located at WK Eye Institute - North. In 2012 Dr. Shelby became the first surgeon in Louisiana to be certified to perform laser cataract surgery using the LenSx Femtosecond Laser located at WK Eye Surgery Center. Biography: Proud to carry on the family tradition of his father and uncles, Dr. Swearingen is part of a family of ophthalmologists. A Shreveport native, he earned a degree in zoology from LSU and his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport where he also served a residency in ophthalmology. Dr. Swearingen then became a partner in the Swearingen Eye Clinic, was founded by his father and his uncle. In 2010, Dr. Swearingen joined WK Eye Institute where he practices comprehensive ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Swearingen and his wife, Joanne, have been married for 28 years. She is a certified optician and manages, Optical Zone, an optical dispensary. They have four children: Joseph, a captain in the Marine Corps; Susan who works in the fashion industry in New York City; Sarie, a pre-school teacher in Nashville, and John Paul, a senior at LSU.
