Biography: Dr. Charles graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in chemistry from the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ. She later graduated from Drexel University School of Medicine in 2001. She went on to train at Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC where she acted a Chief Resident. In July 2005 Dr. Charles joined the Army and served as active duty military physician at Ft Riley, KS. In 2007 she was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After returning from Afghanistan in 2008 she was appointed Chief of the OB/GYN department at Irwin Army Community Hospital in Ft Riley, KS.Dr Charles is board certified in general Obstetrics and Gynecology. She manages normal as well as high risk obstetrics complicated by hypertension, gestational diabetes, twin pregnancies. She is interested in VBAC, water births (first delivery at Hudson Valley Hospital was a water birth). She also works in conjuction with doulas. She offers a wide range of services in gynecology including minimally invasive laparascopic surgery, family planning and contraception, adolescent health counseling, menopausal management, urinary incontinence and infertility. She provides outpatient office procedures such as Essure vaginal sterilization, endometrial ablation, hysteroscopy.

Biography: Dr. Peter Liou is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University and an Attending Transplant Surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is board-certified in general surgery and received specialty training in abdominal transplant and hepatobiliary surgery. His practice interests focus on the surgical management of adults and children with liver and bile duct disease including those with liver failure, cirrhosis, bile duct and gallbladder disease, as well as those with benign and malignant liver tumors and cysts. He is skilled in minimally invasive surgery and trained to perform both laparoscopic and robotic surgery whenever possible. Dr. Liou received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry and Music from Columbia College, and subsequently attended medical school at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was the recipient of a Doris Duke Translational Research Grant under the mentorship of Dr. Jessica Kandel. Dr. Liou then completed his general surgical residency at New York Presbyterian / Columbia, while receiving additional clinical training in Intestinal/Multivisceral transplant and Adult ECMO with Drs. Tomoaki Kato and Matthew Bacchetta during that time. He then continued with a surgical fellowship in Abdominal Organ Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at New York Presbyterian Columbia and Weill Cornell. Biography: Kazuki N. Sugahara, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery. Dr. Sugahara studies drug delivery systems to enhance the diagnosis and therapy of various cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer. He has developed various tumor-targeting peptides that deliver compounds selectively to cancer tissue, and reported them in a number of high-profile journals such as Science. One of his peptides, the iRGD tumor-penetrating peptide, is now in a first-in-human Phase 1 clinical trial for metastatic pancreatic cancer. Dr. Sugahara's work has been recognized through grants and awards from national agencies such as the NIH, Department of Defense, and Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and also from international societies such as the Japan Society of Drug Delivery Systems. After receiving his medical degree from Shiga University of Medical Science in Japan, Dr. Sugahara underwent surgery residency at Tazuke Kofukai Kitano Hospital, Osaka, Japan, received a PhD in cancer biology and immunology from the Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, La Jolla, California. He came to Columbia University in 2013 to take dual appointment as a categorical resident and a research faculty at the Department of Surgery. He now continues to pursue his career as a surgeon scientist with a special focus on pancreatic cancer.
