Biography: Dr. Cathey is a Urogynecologist and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeon at the Women's Pelvic Health and Continence Center. Urogynecology, a subspecialty within Obstetrics and Gynecology, is dedicated to the treatment of women with pelvic floor disorders such as incontinence and prolapse. Urinary incontinence, leakage of urine, is a very common condition affecting women. Prolapse simply means a bulging or pressure sensation in the vaginal area caused by displaced or falling female organs such as the bladder, uterus, vagina or rectum. Prolapse and incontinence frequently occur together. These are not a normal part of a woman's aging. Non-surgical and surgical treatment is available for patients with these uncomfortable symptoms. After completing her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Cathey underwent fellowship training where she spent several years focusing on the treatment of female gynecological disorders. She first completed a Fellowship in Advanced Gynecological Endoscopy focusing on minimally invasive surgical techniques such as laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. This was followed by a Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery fellowship, where she concentrated on treatment of pelvic floor disorders. She currently participates in training other gynecologists in these areas.

Female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, or FPM-RS is a subspecialty of both urology and obstetrics and gynecology. Urogynecology is another name for it. A female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgeon diagnoses and treats pelvic floor disorders, including uterine prolapse, bladder prolapse and incontinence—loss of bowel or bladder control. The pelvic floor includes the muscles and tissues that control and support the rectum, uterus, vagina and bladder.
Female pelvic medicine surgeons use medications, surgery, and nonsurgical therapies to treat pelvic floor disorders.

- Evaluates a patient’s medical history and educates the patient about disorders of a woman’s pelvic organs and pelvic floor, which are the muscles and tissues that control and support the rectum, uterus, vagina and bladder
- Performs physical exams with particular attention to the health of the pelvic organs and pelvic floor
- Orders and interprets laboratory and imaging tests
- Diagnoses and treats pelvic prolapse and other pelvic organ and pelvic floor conditions
- Performs surgeries and prescribes medications, exercises, physical therapy, and other therapies
- Provides direct care in the office and in the hospital
- Works closely with your primary care doctor and other specialists and members of your healthcare team to provide optimal care

If you are experiencing incontinence or other symptoms that might be related to a pelvic floor disorder, set up an appointment with an experienced urogynecologist today.
