Thomas attended medical school and completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, in Nashville, Tennessee where he was awarded the Dean's Scholarship. During this time he was active in organized medicine and participated in basic research in molecular physiology and biophysics as well as clinical research in ophthalmology.He completed a three-year ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas-Houston. While at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Dr. Thomas participated in research in the field of laser vision correction (LASIK), investigating corneal ablation surface smoothness via electron microscopy with various LASIK platforms for which he received the best resident research project award.
