Dr. Sureka grew up in central Illinois and received his medical degree and master's degree in public health from Northwestern University. He completed his pediatric residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital where he also spent time as a transport physician. Dr. Sureka completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University, where his research focused on preventative cardiology as well as the cardiac effects of chemotherapy.
