Biography: Dr. Waheed graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Anthropology from East Carolina University. She pursued her Medical Doctorate (MD) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine where she received the prestigious William deB. Biography: Dr. Sujit Sheth is the Chiefof the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine andan Attending Pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian Phyllis and David Komansky Children's Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is also Vice Chair of ClinicalResearch in the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine.Dr. Shethis board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology, and is an expert in iron metabolism, thalassemia, and sickle cell disease. Dr. Sheth completed his medical training at the University of Bombay, receiving his medical degree (MBBS) in 1988 and completing his resident specialty training in Pediatrics (MD) in 1991. A year later, he entered Columbia University, College of Physicians & Surgeons as a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, completing his fellowship in 1995 and his obligatory additional year of residency in Pediatrics in 1996. Following his residency, Dr. Sheth joined the Columbia University faculty where he was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. In 2004, he assumed responsibility as Clinical Director of the Pediatric Hematology program, and was promoted to Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Sheth is recognized for his dedication to medical education. At NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, he was voted Attending of the Year by the Pediatric Housestaff in 2010 and nominated for Teacher of the Year eight times, receiving the honor in 1999. Biography: Monica Bhatia, MD specializes in the care of children with noncancerous blood disorders who may benefit from bone marrow transplantation, especially sickle cell anemia. She and her colleagues are working to reduce the toxicity (side effects) and complications of this treatment without compromising its effectiveness, and to make it available to more patients. The field of pediatric hematology brings with it many intellectual challenges, and bone marrow transplantation in particular is especially dynamic. Dr. Bhatia has the opportunity to provide care for the sickest children, potentially curing their disease. She builds strong relationships with her patients and their families that last for years. It is inspiring for her to see young patients grow up to lead healthy, productive lives. NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has a robust program for bone marrow transplantation for sickle cell anemia - the only cure for this disease. Dr. Bhatia and her team have witnessed remarkable results among children who are cured with bone marrow transplantation and spared from the potentially life-threatening complications of sickle cell disease. Yet despite the advances made, only 15 percent of patients with sickle cell disease have a matched sibling bone marrow donor. Therefore, Dr. Bhatia and her team conduct research to evaluate a procedure called "CD34-selected stem cell transplantation" to remove T-cells from donor bone marrow for patients without a matched sibling donor. This approach reduces the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a potential complication of bone marrow transplantation in which T-cells from the donor attack the tissue of the recipient. This approach to harnessing stem cells could potentially make bone marrow transplantation a safer, effective option for many patients who are seeking a cure for sickle cell disease. Dr. Bhatia and her colleagues are currently assessing reduced-intensity transplantation, which uses lower doses of chemotherapy to decrease the risk of side effects and long-term complications without lowering the effectiveness of treatment. She is also interested in looking for ways to further improve the quality of life of patients who have had a bone marrow transplant in addition to fertility preservation.

Biography: Dr. Hua-Jay "Jeff" Cherng is an assistant professor of medicine in the lymphoma program in the Division of Hematology and Oncology. He earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and completed internal medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequently trained at MD Anderson Cancer Center for his hematology and oncology fellowship. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology. Dr. Cherng is a clinical investigator who researches non-invasive response assessment tools such as biomarkers and imaging to predict outcomes of lymphoma patients. His focus is on circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), fragments of genetic material shed by lymphomas that can be sequenced and tracked to measure molecular response and minimal residual disease. His work on ctDNA and PET scans in lymphoma has led to publications in high-impact journals including Blood, Blood Advances, American Journal of Hematology, and British Journal of Haematology. He has earned abstract merit awards from the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and Pan Pacific Lymphoma Conference. His accomplishments during fellowship earned him a Waun Ki Hong Award for Achievement in Clinical Investigation. His research on ctDNA in patients with relapsed lymphoma receiving chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy is funded by a Conquer Cancer Young Investigator Award grant. He is a member of Southwestern Oncology Group Lymphoma Working Group and Committee. He was selected to participate in the Academy of Next Wave of Investigators for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and the American Society of Hematology Clinical Research Training Institute, competitive programs aimed at supporting academic and career development for promising clinical researchers. Dr. Cherng's goal is to design clinical trials with treatment guided by ctDNA; this would allow for treatment de-escalation in good responders to minimize toxicity and escalation in poor responders to maximize chance for durable remissions. Dr. Cherng sees patients with all types of lymphoma with an emphasis on aggressive non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphomas. He treats patients with standard-of-care treatments as well as on clinical trial protocols.

Biography: Monica Kasbekar, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in the division of Hematology/Oncology and a member of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Kasbekar's clinical practice focuses on the treatment of hematologic malignancies, including acute and chronic leukemias, myeloproliferative neoplasms, and myelodysplastic syndrome. Her research aims to understand how aging and inflammation contribute to the development of blood cancers. Dr. Kasbekar received her MD from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, and her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge as a National Institutes of Health-Oxford-Cambridge Scholar. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital and her Medical Oncology fellowship at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where she served as Chief Fellow. Dr. Kasbekar is the recipient of multiple national and international awards including the EvansMDS Young Investigator Award, the American Society of Hematology Research Training Award for Fellows, the NCATS Director's Award for Scientific/Medical Achievement, and the NIH Fellows Award for Research Excellence.

Biography: Dr. Chen is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and medical oncologist specializing in the treatment of thoracic cancers including non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, and mesothelioma. She received her bachelor's degree in molecular biology from Princeton University and completed her medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She completed both her internal medicine residency and medical oncology fellowship at Columbia University, where she served as Chief Fellow. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Chen has an interest in identifying novel therapies through clinical trials for patients with lung cancer and other tumor types. She received the Journal of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology in recognition of her work. Biography: Mariam El-Ashmawy, MD PhD is a medical oncologist andtranslational scientist with specialization in the treatment of advanced skincancer and ocular melanoma. Her research investigates the complex geneticlandscape of cancer in order to develop new therapies. In the laboratory, her work has been dedicated to understanding the complex genomic landscape of cancer and developing novel targeted therapeutic strategies. Her ongoing projects include testing novel RAS pathway inhibitors in preclinical models of gastric and esophageal cancer as well as a first-in-human clinical trials for patients with NRAS mutant melanoma.

Biography: Linda Wu, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Dr. Wu earned her MD degree from Weill Cornell Medical College and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. She then completed fellowship training in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. As a medical oncologist, she specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies, with particular focus on pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers. Dr. Wu is actively involved in research to improve treatments for cancer. She is involved in developing and leading clinical trials, including multicenter investigator-initiated trials, to investigate novel therapeutic strategies for pancreatic and biliary cancers as well as other gastrointestinal malignancies. Her research interests also include discovering biomarkers predictive of response and resistance to therapy and understanding the tumor microenvironment to improve the effectiveness of immunotherapy for gastrointestinal malignancies, and she has published multiple articles in these areas. Dr. Wu works closely as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver compassionate care at the highest levels, utilizing a personalized approach to offer cutting-edge therapies.

Biography: James H. Garvin, MD, PhD, is a board-certified pediatric hematologist-oncologist who specializes in the care of children and adolescents with brain tumors. He is Principal Investigator at CUMC for the Head Start Program of radiation-sparing intensive chemotherapy for infants and young children with brain tumors. He was principal investigator for a Children's Oncolgy Group protocol for childhood ependymoma. He also offers novel therapies for recurrent brain tumors through our program's membership in Developmental Therapeutics Program of the COG. In addition, Dr. Garvin started the pediatric bone marrow transplant program, and continues as a member of the BMT group. He has particular interest in autologous transplant for brain tumors and allogeneic transplant for metabolic disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes, as well as supportive care for BMT patients. Dr. Garvin became interested in pediatric hematology/oncology through research during medical school in the laboratory of a pediatric hematologist.
