Biography: Thazin Saw, MD, is an internist at NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Brooklyn, affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. She is board certified by American Board of Internal Medicine since 1998 and a fellow of American College of Physicians. After earning her medical degree from Institute of Medicine Yangon, Myanmar, she completed internal medicine residencies at Havering Group Hospitals in London, England and At SUNY Long College Hospital in Brooklyn. She has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University. She has previously served as Clinical Assistant Professor, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and SUNY Brooklyn, and Medical Director, Employee Health, Long Island College Hospital, Brooklyn.

Care Philosophy: Dr. LaScalea completed his residency in Primary Care/Internal Medicine at New York Weill Cornell Medical Center. His strong interest in community affairs has led him to direct a crisis hotline while in college, as well as work as an educator in adolescent substance abuse prevention. Dr. LaScalea is also a winner of the 2001 Barbara Zucker Traveling Fellowship in Clinical Infectious Diseases. His travel to Africa has further inspired interest in international health.

Biography: Dr. Lisa Kalik earned her undergraduate degree at Duke University with a BS in psychology in 1999. She went to medical school at New York University (NYU) finishing in 2004 and then completed her internal medicine residency training there in 2007.Dr. Kalik went on two medical missions with Doctors without Borders in 2007 and 2008, spending 6 months in a South Sudan hospital treating patients with Human African Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) and three months in Nigeria responding to measles and meningitis outbreaks. Shortly after her travels to Africa, she went to Chinle, Arizona for two months and worked in a hospital and clinic on the Navajo Indian Reservation. Since her return to New York in 2009 and prior to joining Weill Cornell Medicine in 2020, she practiced general internal medicine first at NYU Internal Medicine Associates and then at Medical Offices of Manhattan.Dr. Kalik currently lives in Long Island City with her husband and two children.

Biography: Irina Rimel graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in 1998. She completed her internship at Elmhurst Hospital providing treatments in both inpatient and outpatient medical settings. She has completed her Masters of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, is licensed in New York State and is certified in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).For the past 17 years Irina provided acupuncture treatments at Mount Sinai St Luke's and Mount Sinai West Hospitals in the outpatient and inpatient clinical settings

Biography: Dr. Jamil was born and raised in Northern Virginia. She is the eldest daughter of first-generation Pakistani immigrants and the first person in her family to attend college and medical school. She majored in Biology with a minor in Religion and obtained her Bachelors of Science degree from George Washington University in Washington, DC. She went on to achieve her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC and completed her training in internal medicine at Icahn School of Medicine Mount Sinai in New York. Dr. Jamil is passionate about many aspects of primary care, primarily health promotion, management of chronic conditions, disease screening and prevention, and women's health.

Biography: Dr. Oza is originally from Princeton, New Jersey. She went to New York University where she studied Psychology and Spanish in addition to her pre-med studies. She attended Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where she participated in a student-run clinic that served the uninsured patient population in New Brunswick, NJ. She went on to complete her residency training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with a focus on Primary Care. Her clinical interests include diabetes, hypertension, and thyroid disease. In her spare time, Dr. Oza enjoys reading, traveling, and exploring new restaurants.

Biography: Dr. Robert Fakheri completed his undergraduate, summa cum laude with double major in Biology and Chemistry, and medical school with Honors at New York University (NYU). He then also completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at NYU.Prior to joining Weill Cornell Medicine in 2018, Dr. Fakheri served as faculty for NYU School of Medicine and practiced as a hospitalist. In this position, Dr. Fakheri played an integral role in clinical education for medical students and trainees while also caring for acutely ill and complex patients admitted at NYU hospital. In addition to education and clinical care, Dr. Fakheri is also a distinguished author in the medical literature with multiple peer-reviewed publications on a variety of topics including climate impact on kidney stones, comparative effectiveness of blood pressure medications, use of biomarkers for evaluating infections, treatment and prevention of constipation, risk stratification for heart disease, and vitamin D supplementation. Furthermore, Dr. Fakheri has been highly regarded as a speaker, providing Grand Rounds talks at other medical centers. Dr. Fakheri also served as the Vice President for the local NYC chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine.Dr. Fakheri is excited to now work with Weill Cornell Medicine Primary Care and looks forward to using his years of experience to help patients with all of their medical concerns, big or small. Biography: Dr. Mark S. Pecker is an Attending Physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center (NYPH-WCMC) and is a Professor of Clinical Medicine and a Professor of Clinical Medicine in Physiology and Biophysics at Weill Cornell Medical College. He received his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1977 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Affiliated Hospitals, where he served as Chief Resident. He is certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College Physicians.Dr. Pecker is an American Society of Hypertension Hypertension Specialist with expertise in autonomic dysfunction, aortic dissection and secondary and endocrine hypertension. Dr. Pecker has a passion for medical training. He served as the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency at NYPH-WCMC for 15 years. He remains active in teaching residents and medical students in New York, as well as at Hamad General Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar. He helps supervise the yearly International Case Discussion Summer School in Munich, Germany, in coordination with the medical faculties of the Technical University of Munich and Ludwig Maxmillian University.At Weill Cornell he is an Associate Program Director of the Tri-Institution MD-PhD Program. He also serves as a Chair on the Translation Research Advisory Committee and as the Clinical Sciences Pathway Exploratory Advisor for the Area of Concentration Program at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Biography: Dr. Lash was previously at LIJ-Albert Einstein College of Medicine as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine following her residency at Mt. Sinai. She has been at the Weill Cornell Medical Associates -- East Side Practice since 2003. Her clinical interests focus around healthy lifestyle maintenance.

Biography: Dr. Margaret Hoffman went to Harvard College and graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA receiving her MD in 1993. Her Internship and Residency were at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center, Brighton, MA and the Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Burlington, MA. Dr. Hoffman was on Senior Clinical Staff and a Junior Attending at the Lahey Hitchcock Clinic prior to coming to Weill Cornell Medicine in 1998. Her interests are in women's health and preventive medicine. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.

Biography: Dr. Charles L. Bardes graduated from Princeton University (summa cum laude) in 1978 and from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1986. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency training at The New York Hospital (now known as NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital) in 1989. He has served on the medical center's faculty since that time and teaches at Weill Cornell Medical College, having served as Associate Dean (Admissions) for 21 years. In addition to numerous awards for teaching and clinical care, he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha and a fellow of both The American College of Physicians and the New York Academy of Medicine. He also serves as associate editor for the Journal of General Internal Medine and The Blood Project.

Biography: Dr. Mulhern received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University. She then went on to study animal behavior and ecology at the University of California at Berkeley where she completed a Masters degree. She returned to the east coast to the University of Connecticut School of Medicine where she received her MD degree. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at the University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, in 1998, and has been working as a general internist in Manhattan since completion of her training.

Biography: Alphonso Scotti was born and raised in New York City. He spent years in biomedical research prior to graduating from Touro College PA program in 2006. He trained at Beth Israel Medical Center where he started his career in Emergency Medicine. Alphonso relocated to Sag Harbor, NY where he has been practicing Urgent Care and Primary Care. Mr. Scotti has particular interests in preventative and integrative medicine as well as treating his patients urgent care needs.

Biography: Dr. Sidney Stein completed his B.A.degree at New York University-University College in 1972. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York-Downstate Medical Center in 1979. Dr. Stein is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein Medical College where he has held that position since 1994. He was elected as a member of the Medical Board of Beth Israel Medical Center in 1990 and still currently serves in that position. He also served as President of the Board in 2001 and 2002.Dr. Stein was namedin New York Magazine's Best Doctor List from 2001-2008.

Biography: Dr. Emy grew up in the Bronx. He studied History and Literature at Harvard College and received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed residency training at Montefiore Medical Center. Following several itinerant years of locum tenens assignments, he realized that there truly is no place like home and returned to New York City, where he practices general internal medicine. He feels it is important to treat and understand the whole person on the basis of the best available evidence and takes interest in all areas of internal medicine.

Biography: Dr. Rajiv Kinkhabwala was born in York, Pennsylvania and grew up in the central New Jersey town of East Brunswick. He graduated from Cornell University Phi Beta Kappawith a BA in Economics and worked for one year as a currency options trader before going on to medical school at the New York University School of Medicine. He then completed anInternal Medicine residency at NYU Medical Center/Bellevue and was selected Chief Resident. Prior to joining Weill Cornell, he practiced primary care medicine for close to 25 years in Manhattan as part of Murray Hill Medical Group/Caremount/Optum, where he served on their Executive Committeeand as a managing director responsible for the ongoing operations of the practice. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and two daughters.

Biography: Dr. Stracher is a graduate of Amherst College and received his M.D. degree in 1990 from State University of New York Health Science Center. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 1993 and then a fellowship in Infectious Disease in 1995 at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. Biography: Dr. Hermos is board-certified in Internal Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After a brief stint as a ski instructor, Dr. Hermos received her Master's degree in Education at The University of Colorado, Boulder. She was a classroom teacher in Denver for several years before moving to New York in 2000. Dr. Hermos worked in the non-profit sector before deciding to study medicine. Dr. Hermos attended medical school and trained in Internal Medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She has now been practicing primary care in New York City since completing her residency in 2013.

Biography: Dr. Joseph Chang is a graduate of the Seven-Year Medical Program at Boston University and Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado where he was also chief resident. Dr. Chang also completed a fellowship in General Internal Medicine from Columbia University and holds a masters degree in epidemiology from their Mailman School of Public Health. From 2003 to 2012, Dr. Chang practiced at Columbia University Medical Center where he served as the Assistant Director of the Section of Hospital Medicine. He played an active role in the Medical House Staff Training Program as a clinician educator and also served as a Key Faculty Advisor for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Chang has received numerous teaching awards throughout his career including the prestigious Daniel V. Kimberg Memorial Junior Faculty Teaching Award from Columbia University Department of Medicine in 2009. Additionally, he was named a three-year recipient of the Ewig Clinical Scholar Award for dedication and excellence in clinical teaching in 2010. Dr. Chang also received the Physician of the Year Award from New York-Presbyterian Hospital in 2010. Dr. Chang served as a Team Physician for the New York Yankees from 2007 to 2012. Dr. Chang is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Care Philosophy: Before joining the staff of Weill Cornell Medical Associates, Dr. Smerd worked as a primary care doctor at the Manhattan Veterans Affairs Hospital and at Odyssey House, a therapeutic drug community in Spanish Harlem. She was named chief resident after completing her medical residency at New York University. Dr. Smerd studied medicine at the Sackler School of Medicine/NY State program in Tel Aviv, Israel. She has also lived in Kathmandu and traveled the countryside of Nepal researching Vitamin A deficiency. She earned her bachelor's degree from Vassar College, where she graduated with a major in Women's studies focusing on Anthropology. Though originally from Pittsburgh, Dr. Smerd now lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two children.

Biography: Dr. Baskin is a graduate of Cornell University and received her M.D. degree in 1998 from State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse. She completed an Internal Medicine internship and residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center, NY in 2001. Since 2001, she has been in practice as a general internist. She joined Weill Cornell Medicinein 2009.

Biography: Dr. Pitaro grew up in Queens, NY, is an alumnus of Regis High School and graduated with a BS in biology from Georgetown University. He received his medical degree from SUNY- Health Science Center at Brooklyn. While in medical school, he spent time in Ghana on a Department of Preventative Medicine and Community Health scholarship . He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at NYU Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital. After medical school, he was an attending physician at the Bellevue Hospital Medical Clinic and started and ran an inpatient medical service for the clinic's hospitalized patients. Prior to joining Weill Cornell, Dr. Pitaro was a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and practiced internal medicine and primary care for over 28 years at Murray Hill Medical Group (later Caremount Medical Group). While at Murray Hill, in addition to a full time practice, he served on the executive committee and was the compliance officer. He lives in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. He is an avid squash player and soccer fan who also enjoys spending time and traveling with his family.
