A+++
My husband has had lumbar and cervical fusion done by Dr Smith, I have had cervical fusion done by him. I had my lumbar fusion by a different doc prior to meeting him and so wish I would’ve known and had him do my lumbar fusion. I feel like I wouldn’t be struggling with the constant problems in my low back had he operated on my back in the first place. My husbands neck and back and my neck have all had great results with the surgeries done by Dr Smith. We have never had any problems getting appointments or imaging. His office staff and nursing staff have always went above and beyond, in my opinion. If I EVER need any neurosurgery I would pick him and I recommend him to anyone who wishes to have a great job done!

super happy
Dr. Smith performed a minimally invasive fusion to my low back a few years ago. It really allowed me to get back to the Colorado hiking I've loved for years. As the weather gets warmer, it reminds me of the gift Dr. Smith has given.

After surgery
My spinal fusion was on a Thursday evening. He came to me on Sunday evening, actually yelling, "I thought I told you I wanted you out of here by now!" I was still on the bed pan and on a pain control button. Looking back, I'm not sure if I feel more sorry for the nurses that were scrambling to find me someplace to go or myself who was in a state of shock. This was at Ridgeline hospital. The nurses were very kind but 'Dr' Smith's bedside manner was indescribably horrid.

Craniotomy experience
I met Dr. Adam Smith when admitted to SCL Lutheran after an MRI showed brain swelling and shifting. He took care to explain to my husband and myself what he recommended as next steps. Within 24 hours I was in surgery for a craniotomy to remove a Grade II Meningioma. He kept my husband updated during surgery and we had confidence I was receiving the best care possible. Post Op appointments all went smoothly and questions answered once we got past a few glitches in the online SCL patient portal. I would highly recommend Dr. Adam Smith.

Dr Smith did a lumbar fusion on me 5 years ago, and he is fantasic. For the past 5 years, I started in a body cast, lived in a facility, received massive physical therapy, as he fixed a number of problems in my back, which was in very sorry shape. Since that time, I can brag that I can now walk, without any dme aid, and after about 3 years, I am now living in a beautiful apartment, independantly. I can swim, I can play my violin, and viola, cook all my favorite foods, go to services, participate in Symphony forums, It was a struggle, but I got there, through Faith of the Heart, and Dr. Adam P Smith!

I am writing this to share my experience with Dr Smith as it was not so good at first but ended up fantastic. I saw Dr Smith 8 years ago for a Colloid Cyst in my brain that was blocking my third ventricle so my brain fluid could not drain out properly. During my first appointment, Dr Smith was late, abrupt and seemingly an arrogant jerk. I decided to not let him touch me. Two weeks later, he called me and spent two hours on the phone in the evening, after hours with me explaining my options and advising me on the best course of action. I decided to move forward with the procedure and I am so glad I did! This man drilled straight through the right side of my brain, expertly removed the cyst and I have been strong, healthy and pain free ever since! Say what you will about his bedside manner but when push comes to shove, I would much rather have the expertise than the touchy, feely persona.

I’ve been managing back pain for more 20 years and this experience was one of the worst. The initial exam was not particularly useful and focused on imaging rather than listening to what I was experiencing. Most distressing, however, came when I tried to get the imaging Dr Smith requested. It was denied for reasons that the doctor failed to provide sufficient medical reasoning. To resolve this, all that was needed was a peer to peer, which the doctor apparently refuses to do. In 20 years I’ve never experienced such a willful approach to leaving patients in the lurch while managing chronic and acute pain. The imaging is meant to inform my recovery plan but it sat in limbo for lack of follow up. I know every practice and doctor is different, but this was more than just poor bedside manner. This was a failure to show concern for the patient as well as a failure to follow up. I did appreciate how Gina and Michelle tried to help but it was still an upsetting and unhelpful experience.

During the appt Dr. Smith said a specific MRI was needed to determine if I was a surgical candidate (radiographically I have a Chiari Malformation but if spinal fluid flow isn’t impeded, surgery won’t help). We talked a bit about the test & when I said I wasn’t really sure I was ready to have someone operating on my brain but I wanted a definitive answer if the malformation was indeed causing my symptoms, he basically shut the appt down & said if I wasn’t willing to have the surgery then there was no point in doing the study. I said many times that I wanted to know what was causing my symptoms so wouldn’t it be worth it to do the study so I would know if I needed to look into other causes? He was dismissive and said, well I’ve looked at your MRI, you don’t have MS and it would probably just cause you more anxiety knowing for sure so if you’re not willing to have the surgery there is no point in doing the study. (I don’t have anxiety) Bottom line: he was a jerk, don’t waste your time

Excellent experience while in a precarious situation. I've had excruciating back pain for years and I just finally need to fix it. Saw another surgeon who recommended a fusion. Thank goodness my friend recommended Dr. Smith. Turns out I just need a decompression and this can be performed minimally invasively. Excellent staff and Dr. Smith has an excellent demeanor. Straight forward and honest. I couldn't ask for more.

I've seen Dr. Smith for years after my brain procedure. He's been nothing but professional and my surgery went great. No recurrence! Seen some negative reviews and I couldn't disagree more about his caring for me as his patient or his skill set. I went to him because my friend was one of his OR nurses who couldn't rave enough about his skill set. He's lived up to that reputation.

Perhaps doctor Smith demeanor it's not grade A however I would much more desire a back surgeon who puts all of his energy into the surgery. I had a lumbar Fusion and for two years I was bedridden however physical therapy has enabled. me to walk. My recent back surgeon review second opinion was that the back it's fine. I hope I get a chance to speak with Doctor Smith. Please don't look for warm fuzzys with Doctor Smith as he has been well trained at Rush University. Much rather, appreciate the fine work he does with the spine. Thank you very much for allowing me to review. My correct email is: Kathleenkatsman@gmail.com

THIS DR. IS ALL ABOUT HIMSELF, THE PATIENT IS SECONDARY. HE'S ARROGANT, RUDE, AND IRRESPONSIBLE. MY BACK STILL ISNT RIGHT AFTER GOING UNDER THE KNIFE WITH SMITH LAST SUMMER. HE'S ALSO A LIAR, & TOLD ME MY CT SCAN OF HIS FINISHED WORK, WAS ALL GOOD. I DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT ABOUT WHAT HE TOLD ME, SO GOT ANOTHER OPINION. I WAS RIGHT, THERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT WENT WRONG WITH HIS SURGERY, AND I'M GOING TO BE DEALING WITH THIS PROBLEM FOR SOME TIME TO COME. ALL BECAUSE OF THE ARROGANT, IMMATURE, INEPT GUY WHO CALLS HIMSELF A DOCTOR! RUN, DONT WALK OUT OF HIS OFFICE!

Dr. Adam Smith fused my neck a few years ago, leaving me with an ugly scar down the back of my neck and a visible protruding bump between my shoulders. The surgery plus having to wear an Aspen Collar for 4 months 24/7, forced my head forward in a fused position, which throws me off balance. I can no longer stand straight. My only hope is to find another surgeon who can undo this mess. Not good.
