Dr. Andrew Nguyen, MD

Dr. Nguyen and Paul McNally were the best team to have in this challenging surgical journey. They walked me step by step on the procedure and why it was being recommended. They took time to answer all of my questions. They showed compassion and care through every step. The online informational videos were also helpful in providing additional information pre and post surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Nguyen and his care team at UCSD. You will be in great hands!

Dr. Nguyen is a fine surgeon who comes with an excellent reputation. I don't have anything bad to say about his surgical skill or surgical knowledge. Although I did find some of his descriptions on explaining my condition to be a little bit too over simplified for my liking. I am an educated individual. Also when I went for my appointments he talked to my husband rather then me! I did not like this at all. One member of his care team, the medical coordinator, is a huge problem. Her name is Iliana Oliva. This woman is a bully and should not be allowed near patients. I had 5 encounters with this women which were absolutely shameful for a person in the field of caring for individuals. One stand out encounter is her calling to reprimand me for calling her after a message. This supposedly wasted her precious time and took her away from scheduling, yet she had enough time to call to just yell at me. I did not complain as she held my surgery schedule in her hands. Dr. Nguyen did back surgery on me and truly performed a miracle. I have been in pain for over 20 years and through several surgeries with another surgeon. I woke up from surgery with virtually NO back pain at all! Seeing the x-rays post surgery literally made me cry it was so perfectly straight, replacing old hardware with new. My road to recovery has been the easiestI have ever experienced. While I am dealing with “surgical pain” there is no other pain! I do not and have not taken pain medication since day 2 in hospital. I am careful to adhere to care instructions and still working with retrainingmy muscles to work correctly but beyond that I am thrilled with the outcome. Dr. Nguyen truly saved my life. I am looking forward to my next chapter in life pain free thanks to him.

Dr Nguyen provided sufficient time and information on most pre-op visits however on the 1st post-op visit (in hospital) he spoke to me from the doorway and didn't come into the room. On the 1st office post-op visit he was very rushed and seemed genuinely surprised that I had questions for him and jokingly answered some of the questions as he backed down the hallway.

Dr. Nguyen is an amazing surgeon. I got in a horrible accident and my boyfriend died. One of my inguries was I broke my back and he put rods and screws in my back so I can still walk. Thank you Doctor!

Dr. Nguyen took time to explain the complicated surgical procedure that was needed to repair my back. It allayed my fears and he followed up personally a few times to make sure I was doing well. I highly recommend Dr Nguyen. His assistant Paul is also very knowledgeable. The entire staff was friendly and welcoming. I’m ver thankful to have been referred to Dr Nguyen who also has a wonderful sense of humor.

Dr. Nguyen is highly experienced with nerve and spine problems, he takes good care about patients problems and with good explain of the best solutions.

I would highly recommend Dr Nguyen for spinal surgery. I had multiple appointments and he explained my condition and reviewed my options in detail. My surgery was successful and he has been patient and answered all my questions pre and post op surgery.

Our questions and concerns are always met and answered with professionalism, caring and concern, and a little humor! On the occasion when we call in, the call is returned in a timely manor. We highly recommend Dr Nguyen and his staff to anyone with back and spinal issues!

Confidence

From the very start I felt that I was going to be in good hands with Dr. Nguyen because of his ability to communicate the plan, and answer my questions, with clarity and honsety. With each visit, including the Surgery itself, my confidence increased regarding Dr. Nguyen's abilities. It was always obvious that he cared for my well being and wanted the best end result he could possibly provide for me.

Dr. Nguyen is at the top of his profession in surgical knowledge and able to offer the most advanced procedural approaches that modern medicine has. This means that better surgical outcomes are likely with someone of his skill and knowledge. Dr. Nguyen does see a lot of patients, so much of a patient's interactions may be with his staff. Therefore, one has to come to the appointments with well-researched questions to make the most out of the time you actually get with Dr. Nguyen.

Dr Nguyen’s explanation of the surgery was very helpful and easy to understand. I felt very comfortable with Dr Nguyen doing the surgery.

Though it took a while to get the initial appointment, once there the Doc was up front about what could go well, and the alternatives if it didn’t go well. He listened to my concerns and put them to rest. Within a couple days of that visit his office called me with 3 appointments already set up for the pre-op, surgery, and post op. The Doc replaced 2 disks and for the first time in years I have no pain.

Arrogant, rude and dismissive. All the while he’s telling me bad news about my surgery he was spinning a fidget spinner in his hand.

needed to have a follow-up for an issue I am having with a previous surgery by Dr. Nguyen. He has very poor communication skills and it seems he is not versed in current treatments. His office had zero coordination. My imaging orders were sent wrong and his office never explained that I needed to go back and get the imaging. All he did was blame me for not knowing where his office sent me. There was little effort on their part to get the images. My only option was to make another appointment wait weeks and come back in vs. his office getting the films and calling me back. His primary solution is to talk to a pain specialist. I have a lot of experience with spine surgeons and Dr. Nguyen is by far the worst one. He had no concern for wasted time for his patients nor did he make any effort to understand the situation. The Doctors at Cedars Sinai are significantly better trained. Save yourself grief and make the drive.

I had a very good experience with Dr Nguyen, having an L4/5 fusion.
