John’s opinion
Not great/ok. These doctors try hard and are receptive to unique problems but psychiatry just isn’t where it should be by any means and they know that. Anhedonia, melancholic depression and major depression are some of the hardest things to treat and really the only reason people stay in psychiatry. They are highly misunderstood and understudied. It’s not their fault when you come into treatment. But these doctors shouldn’t be charging insane amounts of money for what they in psychiatry don’t fully understand or can’t completely treat. I spent a fortune with this doctor after developing a pseudo psychosis from trauma. He was hardly at all able to move the needle on it. There are new drugs on the way Ulotaront, KARxt and a few others for the most debilitating conditions. They are in development and in trials right now. but as of now it’s certainly worth mentioning these to these doctors.

Good psychiatrist, very knowledgeable and up to date on the lingo, spent an absolute fortune with this doctor, won’t follow up with past patients. Poor bedside manner. His office assistant is absolutely aweful

Dr. Shurman is by far one of the most caring and educated Psychiatrists that I have dealt with. My family and I have dealt with a plethora of others in the search for medication to help me. Dr. Shurman has helped me on the best and worst of days and has always maintained a friendly caring relationship.

I worked with Dr Shurman probably for six years. We worked through many issues together and I learned a lot from him. Sometimes he gave me good advice and sometimes bad. He is pretty unconventional as far as psychiatrists I’ve seen are concerned as to where he’s willing to take talk therapy, into pretty taboo and far-out topics. Sometimes he rambles on and it’s hard to interrupt him. Try to avoid Las Encinas, the hospital he works for, if you can. I’m sure there are worse places but it was a pretty bad hospital in my opinion. At the end our working relationship fell apart and I had to move to another state closer to my family. However, I am glad that I met him and thankful for his help.

Dr. Shurman has helped me more than I can say. I was beyond non-functional when I met him, and now I am married, in school, and well-medicated. He is funny, compassionate, and available in a crisis. He also allows for disagreement in therapy; unlike other doctors, you can be honest with him. I am enormously surprised by other negative reviews on this site, but I suppose that's part of the job of working with people who need psychiatric care. I would recommend Dr. Shurman for any psychiatric disturbance, addiction, or personal or familial issue.

I usually keep my opinions to myself, but if there is any way for me to offer a shortcut to someone else struggling with depression I am happy to share my story. It hasn't been easy but I have always been proactive in finding a way to support myself living a full life while having depression ? even armed with that tenacity -- it was extremely difficult to find a doctor that understood how to prescribe the right medication for me ? one that would support me and give me relief without cutting me

My experience with Dr. Shurman has been excellent -- a great therapist, excellent psychopharmacologist, and good guy. He is reachable in case of emergency, very responsive, and his office provides good customer service (unlike most doctor's offices). I can't recommend him highly enough.

This is one of the worst psychiatrists I have ever seen. He overcharges more than anyone I've ever worked with in the industry, he is pompous and arrogant, and he makes false assumptions without getting to know you. His assistant is also quite rude. Avoid like the plague if you care about your mental health.

I've been seeing Dr. Shurman for over 16 years and I credit him with helping me rise from a very dark place and be the healthy person I am today. He is always honest, professional, patient and trustworthy. I highly recommend him.
