Living & Moving Pain Free
I've participated in sports all my life and was recommended to Dr. McGillivary 25 years ago.Two scopes on one knee, the last 20 years ago, pain free ever since. A scope & microfracture surgery on the other prolonged me skiing and running for 14 years before needing a replacement. Surgery also required repairing a torn ligament & damaged bone. Dr. McGillivary has also done a total shoulder clean-up, residuals from a baseball injury.During each procedure, Dr. McGillivary was patient, explained all reports and left me feeling confident. Outstanding bedside manner, received a visit during each recovery. Office staff, Manager Pam, there from the beginning and recently Veronica. Their courtesy, professionalism, and efficiency with scheduling, communications and claims was excellent.I'm now in my mid-senior years. Thank you Dr. McGillivary, Pam & Veronica for your care, concern, encouragement, and priceless gift of being able to remain active & pain free. They are most highly recommended.

Outstanding Experience
My experience with Dr. MacGillivray was outstanding from beginning to end. I highly recommend him. I went to Dr. MacGillivray for a broken collarbone. He explained what needed to be done and took time to answer my questions. He fit me into his surgery schedule just four days after my visit. His staff is highly efficient. The scheduling of appointments and all follow-up communication was excellent. The surgery itself was incredibly smooth. I was impressed by the whole experience at HSS. Everything worked like a well oiled machine.

So good I went back for more!
I've been a sailor my whole life and when my left knee started acting up I needed to get it sorted out and Dr. MacGillivray came highly recommended. So in November of 2022 I had my left knee operated on and was able to compete in a world championship this past February and the knee was great and has been ever since. However, my right knee began acting up over the summer and I went back to Dr. MacGillivray for round 2 this past November and I'm so glad I did. I'm now set to compete in February in the US Olympic Sailing Trials which in no way could I perform well while the knee was in the state it was in. I'm grateful that I had Dr. MacGillivray handle it for me and I'm hoping that's the last of it. I can't recommend him and his team at HSS enough, it was a great experience from start to finish.

13 years at HSS with Dr Macgillivray
Over the last thirteen years I've been a patient of Dr Macgillivray's and over this time, he has consistently demonstrated an unrivaled level of expertise and proficiency treating my bone on bone early arthritic knees. Dr. Mac's commitment to doing what's best for his patients and keeping them active has extended my time as a triathlete and kept me highly active as I approach the age of 60. Dr. Mac's patient centric approach, not the one size fits all of prior orthopedic doctors I saw has keep me competing and participating in the activities I love best and thought I may never be able to do again. Thank you Dr. Macgillivray.

Dr. MacGillivray was not prepared, did not review my MRI results and had trouble showing me the results. He may have been good at one time but the Mri seemed to be the license to cut without understanding the complete problem and how best to fix it.

One of the rudest and most inconsiderate doctors I have ever met. As all the other reviews mentioned, Dr. John MacGillivary probably spent 15 seconds with me post op. 1 week after surgery he "examined me" all while keeping one hand on the door handle and quickly rushed me out. A year later I had another ACL surgery but this time chose a different HSS doctor and had a much better experiance. Don't waste your time/money with this guy.

Treated mu mom in 2003 , she was pretty active for a 83 year old.. this bozo claimed a piece of cake she will be back walking painless in 6 wks. She passed with the same pain that she had after the surgery and never healed thanks to this surgeons ability ( which is less than stellar) He was practicing at the time in NY Hospital in Queens.. I made a 3k mile trip to insure that this would be a smooth procedure...a great waste of my moms energy and a big waste of my time.. There are better surgeons

Saw him about 5 years ago for a meniscus and ACL that he repaired. Today, I still have knee discomfort and pain. I only went to him because no other Dr. at HSS at that time would take my insurance. I've had great success with past surgeons at HSS. It's the only place to go! (so i thought) As I have shared with other Drs. at HSS since my past surgery. (I have new ins.) My was dog treated better by our Vet. than I was by this clown. But unfortunately you get what you paid for. HSS is great.

MacGillivray diagnosed my pain as a knee problem and recommended arthroscopic surgery. It did not address my pain, and multiple DRs have since told me it was hamstring tendinitis. 2 months after the surgery, I developed new pain at the portal site, which I have been told by HSS is nerve damage. 1 year later, my quads atrophied from the nerve pain and I now have patellar tendinitis from the atrophy. I am in constant pain and barely able to walk. It is not possible to explain the damage to my life

I visited Dr. MacGillivray about a possible torn ACL The doc rushed to get me of his office. He failed to read my entire MRI report until I asked about a secondary ligament rapture in my knee besides my ACL.His staff is eager to get me to schedule an operation right away even when I've insufficient information to decide about his recommended surgery approach, and when this doc charges a penalty if a patient cancels a surgery appointment in less than a certain number of days.

I've now seen him twice--both times for a second opinion. First time, an orthopedist wanted me to wear a hip-to-ankle cast for three months for a horizontal patella fracture. Dr. MacG said just wear a knee brace for two weeks. He was right. I was fine. This time, I was told an MRI showed an ACL rupture. Dr. MacG read it and said it didn't show that at all. This was consistent with my lack of pain. Dr MacG knows his stuff and clearly doesn't recommend surgery unnecessarily.
