Dr. Deland and his team are amazing
I was referred to Dr. Deland after 3 unsuccessful attempts at an ankle replacement with major surgical and nerve damage with infections. I was in danger of losing my leg from the knee down. After my first appointment, I was scheduled for surgery within 3 days. I had a total of three additional surgical procedures. He was able to save my leg and create a functional ankle. I am eternally grateful. I am now able to enjoy life and walk the beach!!! Dr. Deland is caring, compassionate and concerned. Justin is wonderful, empathetic and like Dr. Deland, takes the time to address my concerns. Bridgette always greeted me with a smile and concern for my recovery. Rosey handled my insurance issues with ease and took the financial stress off of my mind. Under the care of Dr. Deland and his staff, I felt as if I was the only patient being treated.

Successful bunion surgeries
Dr Deland is an outstanding surgeon and a caring and considerate person. He has performed two complicated bunionectomies .(one on each foot) over the past four years, and both have been hugely successful. I am no longer in any pain and both feet look good aesthetically. His staff is very attentive and accessible during the pre and post surgery process.

The Deland Difference: Diligent and Dedicated
A bad slide stealing second base left me with a dislocated ankle, shredded ligaments, fractures, and crushed bone. Lying in the ambulance, staring at my foot twisted 90 degrees with my tibia pushing up against the skin, I thought I’d never walk again. Then, I met Dr. Deland. He saw me same-day, followed me to imaging, arranged an immediate MRI, and carefully explained my complex surgery. Nine hours in the OR, and despite the severity of my injuries, I only needed over the counter pain control for a few days, a testament to his precision, proficiency and patience. Four months later, I was walking. By month five, I was dancing. By month six, I was back at work and squatting 275 lbs. Most days, I forget I was ever injured. Beyond his surgical expertise, his team made all the difference, Rosie handled insurance paperwork stress-free, while Bridget, Monet, and Justin made every visit feel like family. If you need an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Deland is the one you want in your corner.

The Perfectionidt
I have had four foot and ankle surgeries with Dr Deland and not one have I regretted. Between his expertise, his kindness and his assertion of what is best , each successful surgery offers more possibilities for perfection. As a result I, near 70, am more agile, brisk and bouncy than I was in my early 60s.From the moment he pulls up your X-rays and points to each detail , to the ease with which his deft fingers press trigger points on your feet, Dr Deland takes you—his patient—into full confidence. He speaks with compassion and authority , he listens with both too. Every step—and that includes every literal step —along the way is one you will walk together.I am immensely grateful to not only be myself again but to a self enhanced by his skill as much as his heart .

Dr. Deland
From my first visit with Dr. Deland, I knew I was in the best care. He has extensive experience with ankle replacements and was honest and up front with me. Rosie is super-human. Always answering the phone on first ring, and scheduling the impossible appts to accommodate our travels from Buffalo. Monique is also very efficient and always helpful. Surgical team made me feel at ease as well as hospital staff managing pain promptly.

Miracle Worker
The thing that stands out in my visit is that Dr. Deland is a true expert in foot and ankle problems. I have been seeing him for 29 years when I first presented to him with severe osteomyelitis an my paralyzed neuropathic left foot and ankle. He not only saved my leg but has continued to keep me walking since those difficult early days.

THE VERY WORST! He did a standard bunion operation on March 23rd of this year, and put in a screw too long that constantly irritated my navicular bone, as it butted against it. This led to FIVE MONTHS of my wearing a boot, intense pain with every step and bed rest, as I could walk only to he bathroom and kitchen. The idea that he would instruct a fit. 83 year old woman to be at bed rest for so long, goes against everything he learned in med school. He initially tried to blame the victim, saying it was my osteoporosis. I immediately had a DEXA test and learned my bones were significantly stronger than average. He then made up other excuses, after which he threw up his hands and admitted he did not know how to fix it, but recommendedI stay in the boot at bedrest through October. On September 5th, I had surgery with the amazing Dr John Kennedy, head of foot and ankle surgery at NYU Langone and his amazing staff. HE SAVED ME FROM BEING A CRIPPLE DUE TO DELAND MISTAKES.

Horrible foot surgery outcome. Surgery far more excessive than needed and now my foot has lost comfortable functioning and even looks handicapped. Toes are droopy and stiff and original problem has re-occured. The damage cannot be fixed. Doctor did not even bother to check on me post -surgery or explain my long post-surgical recovery. His NP was not helpful either. Do not recommend at all.

I expected a cold, uncaring, boiler plate meeting with Dr. Deland because he’s HSS, renowned, doctor to the famous and the rich, which I am not. Instead what I found was a warm professional who treated ME, not my x-rays, not my age but me. He didn’t come into the examining room with a prescribed solution but he actually spoke with me, not at me. So refreshing and welcome. Of course, all that would be nice but insufficient if he wasn’t very smart and experienced. I trusted his knowledge and expertise. Each and every person I had contact with when I saw Dr. Deland was equally personable and warm, never speaking by rote. I will follow Dr. Deland’s recommendation regarding my problem because, after meeting and talking with him, I trust it is the best path forward.

Dr. Deland is the finest ankle surgeon there is. 5 years ago I had a trimalleolar fracture of my ankle. Today I have to think which ankle had the surgery because the repair was that good. He is a total professional. I was very lucky that he was the surgeon I chose.

I sought out Dr. Jonathan Deland of HSS after I took a nasty fall that resulted in me breaking my instep. I cannot stress enough the level of professionalism that Dr. Jonathan Deland and his staff exhibited. His skill as a surgeon, combined with his compassion, makes him stand heads above the rest. His transparency throughout the entire process alleviated my fears and made me feel that I was cared for every step of the way. After my surgery, he emphasized the importance of listening to his instructions carefully, stating that as long as I followed them closely, I would be fine. I am happy to report that he was correct and that I now experience no pain whatsoever—I’m feeling BETTER than brand new! While I pray that I don’t need his services again anytime soon, I can rest easy knowing that I’m in good hands with Dr. Jonathan Deland. Taking the time to research the right doctor really pays off.

Dr. Deland performed a total ankle replacement on my left foot. The surgery was a complete success and allowed me to regain my life. I found Dr. Deland to be extremely thoughtful in diagnosing the problem and discussing alternatives. He was excellent throughout the recovery process and has remained interested in my case in what is now three years after the surgery. I highly recommend Dr. Deland for patients requiring this complex surgery.

With regard to the reviews below (1) Dr. Deland is conservative, extremely thorough and opts for nonsurgical treatment first; (2) he never urges surgery but gives the option when he believes he can better a patient's circumstances; (3) he apprises of all risks and promises to do his best - no one can be certain that surgery will have desired results; and (4) he is incredibly dedicated to each patient.

I have benefitted from Dr. Deland's knowledge and experience both as a teenager (after a soccer injury) and as an adult (after a ziplining injury). I saw more than 5 othopedic surgeons after my zip-lining injury and most trusted Dr. Deland. Multiple operations were successful and I can now walk again without pain. He is THE surgeon you want in your court.

Dr. Deland performed a Morton's neurectomy which resulted in a hematoma, DVT and CRPS/RSD. Although, I cannot be certain, I suspect that students were involved in my surgery. I highly recommend if you are considering surgery with this Dr. you have him put in writing that no students will be present during your surgery! Wish I had! Presently, my CRPS has spread to both feet and legs and I am in chronic pain.

Dr. Deland is not only the top orthopedist in his field for total ankle replacement, he is the kind of doctor that is there for you when you need him before and after the surgery. I've had no complications. Recovery/rehab has gone better than expected with no pain. I am able to reach him by phone easily and his practice team is respectful, kind and responsive to anything I need. I would recommend him to anyone seeking this type of orthopedic surgery. I look forward to an active life again!

I found Deland to be very distant, relegated most tasks to interns, failed on two successive attempts to fuse subtalor joint. Went to Greisberg at Columbia Presbyterian. Completely different experience, very successful. These guys do thousands of these surgeries a year, so to fail on two successive surgeries is not normal. I just have real questions about him. I have questions about whether he personally? did the operation or just "supervised" a learning doctor. These are just my opinions.
