Dr. VanLandingham is a very articulate and thorough gentleman. However, his office, in trying to schedule a followup, was not helpful. My wife, being bedridden for seven weeks since seeing Dr. VanLandingham at Merit Hospital, could not make an earlier followup. She is now in need of an appointment, but can’t get one, because the office says that she is a NEW patient. Excuse me… They also explained, brusquely, that they were not an urgent care facility. My wife’s recovery and rehabilitation, based on Dr. Vanlandingham‘s diagnosis seven weeks ago, needs a procedure for spinal stenosis. To wait another three weeks for an appointment and then two weeks for a procedure (that Dr. VanLandingham had already acknowledged was necessary) is, basically unforgivable given our circumstances. When a doctor and his office are too busy to see patients that they have seen in the hospital months before it is dangerously disappointing. Beware of this office, especially Jeanie, who suggested we try someone else!

The wait to see the doctor was rather long, but the time he spent explaining why my back gave me so much pain, and still does, more than made up for that wait!

Wonderful experience
I came to the appointment with fear of a possible surgery, but Dr. VanLandingham totally alleviated that fear. He explained the surgical process, and the success rate of such surgery. He indicated that he had done many, many of these surgeries and that the success rate is at 95%. He is young and so comfortably friendly!

pro's and cons
Dr. Vanlandingham is very through and he does a very good job of explaining the procedure. He takes time with his patients, didn't rush and will answer any questions you may have. He says that he only does the more complicated surgeries at New South NeuroSpine. All these are BIG pluses...However, it took me 3 weeks to get an appt allowing my condition to worsen considerably. Then, I had to sit for 3 hours in the waiting room until they called me back. Then it was another 30 minutes until he came in the room. After waiting an hour, I inquired about the wait and was told there were only 2 people ahead of me. So, 2.5 hours for two people. He might have spent 30 minutes with me. At the end of the appt, he got up and said he was going to get something and come back, instead his nurse came back and said he was already with the other patient. I didn't appreciate that. Also, he doesn't prescribe anything so if you're in pain make sure you go to another dr before your appt. Those were the cons

Dr. VanLandingham is honest and caring.
Dr. VanLandingham has given me both hope and options. He’s a surgeon but gave advice about all treatments available both surgical and non-surgical as well as immediate care to mitigate pain in the meantime to weigh choices and plan ahead for down time if I choose to proceed with a surgical cure over symptom treatment. Years ago I tore a rotator cuff. A different doctor I went to looked and talked at me for about three minutes, wouldn’t even look at the x-rays I was told to bring in and when I asked “Is it a sprain or a tear?”, he said “We’ll find out when we cut you open.” That was nuts. In contrast, I’m very grateful to be Dr. VanLandingham’s patient. He took his time, treated me with respect, was kindly honest regarding lifestyle choices I really need to change. The frankness and taking time to answer questions and provide understandable data gives me hope that he loves his work and helping people over cha-Chinging bodies through the surgical theater for belt notches. Good man!

Takes time to explain
Dr VanLandingham took his time to explain my condition from my test results. He listened to the issues I was having and was willing to have more tests run before jumping to a decision of surgery.

Visited with Dr. Vanlandingham to explore surgery options and risk. He spent as much time as I needed to walk through each question and provided a thorough explanation on each question. He made me feel comfortable with proceeding with the recommended surgery.

Only thing I am disappointed with so far is that he delegates everything to his assistants. He did not even attend my follow-up surgical appointment. I only met him for 10 minutes for consultation before deciding to do the surgery and have not seen him since. I would like to hear from him personally how the surgery went, how he thinks I'm doing, and what to expect, instead of having the information passed along to me from others. I'm starting to have some of the same pain I had before the fusion which is adding to my resentment. Having a good bedside manner is a very important part of being a Doctor.

Highest rating possible. Dr. VanLandingham did a spine fusion a little over a year ago. Before the operation I had severe sciatica issues and back pain. After the operation no sciatica and only a little back pain if I overdo, like pick up something too heavy or dig my tractor out after getting stuck. I don't have any pain unless I do something stupid, but I am quickly learning. The friendly, professional service by all the staff was great!! I highly recommend Dr. VanLandingham and his staff.
