Biography: Dr. Danielle Brandman is the director of the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. She specializes management of patients with liver diseases including autoimmune liver disease, viral hepatitis B and C, fatty liver disease, metabolic liver disease, and liver cancers. She sees patients with end-stage liver disease (cirrhosis) and evaluates those who need liver transplantation. She provides medical care to patients before and after liver transplantation. She has a special interest in the care of patients with fatty liver disease.She received her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Psychology (with distinction) from Boston University, and graduated from Rutgers (formerly UMDNJ) New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She completed all of her post-graduate medical training at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), including internal medicine in 2008, gastroenterology fellowship in 2011, and transplant hepatology in 2012. During her gastroenterology fellowship, she completed a Master's of Advanced Studies in Clinical Research in 2011.In 2012, she joined the faculty at UCSF, where she served an integral role in the education of medical students, residents, fellows, and nurse practitioners. She was the director of the intern and resident required and elective rotations in liver transplantation and hepatology. She served as the Program Director for the ACGME-certified Transplant Hepatology Fellowship. She was a key educator in hepatology and liver transplantation for internal medicine residents and subspecialty fellows. Her teaching skills were recognized with an Excellence in Teaching Award from the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators in 2015. She has provided formal and informal mentorship to numerous trainees. She received the Mentor of the Year Award by the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute Resident Research Program. She has served as a mentor for the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD) for several Emerging Liver Scholars.

Biography: Dr. Alyson Fox earned her BA in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University prior to attending the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she served as assistant chief resident. She completed her Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. While at Penn, she completed a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology and served as chief fellow. She completed her advanced fellowship training in Advanced Transplant Hepatology at the University of California, San Francisco and was named clinical fellow of the year by the Department of Medicine. Dr. Fox's clinical practice is focused on the management of patients with a variety of liver diseases including viral hepatitis, alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, inherited and autoimmune liver diseases and liver cancers. As a transplant hepatologist, she has advanced training in the management of the complications of end stage liver disease and caring for patients both pre- and post- liver transplantation. As the medical director of the adult transplant program, she oversees the program operations, protocols, outcomes and initiatives. Care Philosophy: Dr. Jesudian is heavily involved in the care of hospitalized patients with liver disease, both in developing systems to improve quality of care and in the educational instruction of medical students, residents, and fellows at both the Cornell and Columbia Campuses. He also serves as a member of the Department of Medicine Quality Improvement Patient Safety Committee. Dr. Jesudian has authored articles and book chapters in the field of Hepatology and is actively engaged in clinical research, focusing on the areas of complications of cirrhosis and portal hypertension, post-transplant outcomes, and viral hepatitis.

Biography: Dr. Catherine Lucero is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation. After obtaining her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Lucero completed her medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at New York University School of Medicine, where she also served as chief resident. Dr. Lucero completed her advanced fellowship training in Transplant Hepatology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University. She is board certified in Transplant Hepatology and Gastroenterology. She specializes in the management of patients with liver diseases including viral hepatitis B and C, fatty liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, metabolic liver disease, and hepatocellular cancer. Biography: Dr. Emily Schonfeld is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr.Schonfeld earned her BS in biological sciences at Cornell University. She obtained her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and then completed her internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY. She went on to do a gastroenterology fellowship at the New York University School of Medicine and then a transplant hepatology fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. Prior to joining Weill Cornell Medical Center, Dr. Schonfeld spent three years as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Colorado Hospital.Dr. Schonfeld is a transplant hepatologist who specializes in the care of patients with all types of liver disease, including viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, metabolic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Biography: Dr. Elizabeth Verna is the Frank Cardile Associate Professor of Medicine in the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation and Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases at Columbia University, where she practices as transplant hepatologist. Care Philosophy: Dr Ype de Jong is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University and an Attending Physician, New York-Presbyterian Hospital Cornell campus. He joined the faculty after completing his Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology training at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. In his patient practice Dr. de Jong's interests include viral hepatitis, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease as well as liver disease associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In addition he is trained in general Gastroenterology, including endoscopy and colon cancer screening. His research interests are geared to better understanding how hepatitis viruses can evade the immune system and are able to chronically persist in a subset of those infected. To this end he is working on developing new models for hepatitis C virus infection in the basic science arm of the Center for the Study of Hepatitis C at The Rockefeller University.

Biography: Dr. Wattacheril's clinical specialties include all aspects of transplant hepatology, general hepatology and gastroenterology with emphasis on metabolic liver disease and obesity. She specializes in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease as well as all forms of hepatitis, chronic liver disease, and liver cancer in addition to liver transplantation. Her research interests include hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance, gut hormones and metabolic liver disease in adults. Her current research concentrates on the relationship between proteins and lipids that differentiate steatosis from steatohepatitis using an integrated omics approach. Biography: Jason Hawksworth, MD is a noted pioneer in minimally invasive robotic hepatobiliary and transplant surgery. Dr. Hawksworth is the Surgical Director of Adult Liver Transplantation, Chief of Hepatobiliary Surgery, and the Director of Robotic Liver Surgery Program in the Division of Abdominal Organ Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and is an Associate Professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Hawksworth is known for unique and innovative minimally invasive robotic surgeries to remove tumors of the liver, bile duct and pancreas, including robotic major hepatectomy, robotic pancreatectomy, and robotic Whipple. He also specializes in robotic transplantation including robotic kidney transplantation, robotic living donor nephrectomy and robotic living donor hepatectomy. Dr. Kato is Surgical Director of Adult and Pediatric Liver and Intestinal Transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and is a professor of surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Kato is known for unique and innovative surgeries for adults and children, including a six-organ transplant; a procedure called APOLT (auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation) that resuscitates a failing liver by attaching a partial donor liver, making immunosuppressant drugs unnecessary and the first successful human partial bladder transplantation involving the transplant of two kidneys together with ureters connected to a patch of the donor bladder. In a highly publicized case, he led the first reported removal and re-implantation, or auto-transplantation, of six organs to excise a hard-to-reach abdominal tumor. Biography: Dr. Emond is the Vice Chairman of Surgery at Columbia University. He has over 30 years of experience performing liver transplantation and complex liver and biliary surgery in children and adults, including the first living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in the United States. Dr. Emond has published extensively in this field and was the co-chair of the NIH A2ALL program for 13 years. In collaboration with the department of Medicine at Columbia, Dr. Emond recruited the leadership of the Columbia Center for Translational immunology that created the foundation for translational and clinical research in transplantation tolerance. This will lead the way to inducing transplant tolerance in liver patients with the mixed chimerism strategy. As Director of Transplantation at the Columbia University Medical Center Dr. Emond's activities foster clinical excellence and research across all 11 of the solid organ transplant programs at the Medical Center. In recognition of his national and international leadership in transplantation, Dr. Emond is the past president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the pre-eminent association of a transplant surgery. Contribution to Science Living donor liver transplantation Dr. Emond has spent a substantial portion of his career developing living donor liver transplantation and studying the safety of the procedure in both the donor and recipient. He participated in the first living donor liver transplant in the United States and focused on refining the techniques of performing living donor liver transplants and split liver transplants. He was the national co-chair of the NIH-sponsored Adult-to-Adult Living Donor Liver Transplantation (A2ALL) consortium from 2002 to 2015 to study the safety and outcomes of living donor liver transplants. Hepatic resection/ischemia Dr. Emond developed techniques for surgical resection of liver tumors and studied the effect of ischemia during resection on postoperative liver function. These studies include the outcomes of the extent of hepatectomy, the biochemical response to major hepatectomy and ischemia-reperfusion injury of the liver in rodent models. He has studied the clinical safety of inducing total vascular exclusion to provide a bloodless field during the liver transection. This has applications in both liver cancer and living donor hepatectomies. Hepatocellular carcinoma treatment Dr. Emond has studied many aspects of managing patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. These studies have included characterizing the risk factors for recurrence of disease following transplantation due to comorbidities and tumor characteristics. The research team has also studied the optimal method of preventing tumor growth in patients with HCC on the liver transplant wait list in addition to optimal strategies of liver allocation to optimize outcomes following liver transplantation. These studies have contributed to proposed changes in UNOS exception point allocation for liver transplant candidates with HCC. Pediatric liver transplantation Dr. Emond helped develop the field of pediatric liver transplantation. Contributions to this field include: the use of living donors for pediatric patients; use of auxiliary liver transplants for metabolic diseases; use of partial liver grafts for pediatric patients; and technical modifications that improved outcomes for this patient population. Biography: Dr. Llore is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University and an Attending Transplant Surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Llore received her undergraduate degree from Fordham University and her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. She completed general surgery residency at Georgetown University Hospital and abdominal transplant/hepatobiliary fellowship training at New York Presbyterian Columbia and Weill Cornell. She received additional training on the immune response after a liver transplant and xenotransplantation with Dr. Megan Sykes at Columbia Center for Translational Immunology (CCTI). She is board-certified in general surgery and received specialty training in abdominal transplant and hepatobiliary surgery. Her practice interests focus on the surgical management of children and adults with liver and bile duct disease, including benign and malignant liver tumors. She practices minimally invasive surgical techniques in liver surgery to shorten recovery times and reduce post operative discomfort. Biography: Dr. Meaghan Phipps earned her BS in Behavioral Neuroscience at Lehigh University prior to attending medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center where she also served as a chief resident. She then completed her Gastroenterology fellowship at NYP Columbia and advanced fellowship training in Transplant Hepatology at NYP Columbia/Cornell. Dr. Phipps's clinical practice is focused on the care and management of patients with liver disease, including viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, and alcohol-associated liver disease. As a transplant hepatologist, she specializes in the care of patients before and after liver transplantation. Dr. Phipps has a particular interest in the care for patients with liver cancer and works alongside her colleagues in surgery, oncology, and interventional radiology in Columbia's multidisciplinary Liver Tumor Program. Biography: Yael R. Nobel, MD, MS is a transplant hepatologist and physician-scientist at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. She earned her BA in Chemistry with a minor in Global Health and Health Policy from Princeton University prior to attending medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where she also served as a Chief Resident. She then completed her fellowship in Gastroenterology at NYP Columbia and her advanced training in Transplant Hepatology at NYP Columbia/Cornell. Dr. Nobel's clinical practice is focused on the diagnosis and management of patients with liver disease, including autoimmune liver diseases, viral hepatitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, alcohol-associated liver disease, and liver cancer. As a transplant hepatologist, she has expertise in the care of patients before and after liver transplantation. Dr. Nobel completed additional research training through an NIH T32 research fellowship at NYP Columbia and a Masters of Science (MS) in Biostatistics in the Patient-Oriented Research track from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. Her research focuses on connections between intestinal bacteria and liver inflammation. Biography: Dr. Avesh J. Thuluvath is a transplant hepatologist and physician-scientist with expertise in caring for patients with liver disease. Dr. Thuluvath specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, alcohol-associated liver disease and autoimmune liver diseases. He has additional expertise in the care of patients before and after liver transplantation. Dr. Thuluvath's clinical practice is centered on delivering high quality, personalized and patient-centered care for those with liver disease. Prior to joining the faculty at Columbia University Medical Center, Dr. Thuluvath completed his Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology training at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. His additional research training includes an NIH post-doctoral fellowship in liver transplant outcomes research and a Masters in Clinical Investigation. Dr. Thuluvath's research focuses on further elucidating the pathophysiology of frailty and sarcopenia in cirrhosis, with the ultimate goal of developing patient-centered interventions to optimize physical conditioning before liver transplantation.

Biography: Dr. Masaru Kubota is an Assistant Professor of Surgery and a transplant surgeon at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He received his MD in General Surgery and his PhD in pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment from Osaka University in Japan. He is board-certified in General Surgery and Gastroenterology. His interests focus on liver and abdominal transplant surgery, particularly in situ and ex situ organ machine perfusion, including Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP). He is also committed to educating surgical fellows in organ recovery techniques.

Biography: Dr. Amanda Cantor is a transplant hepatologist, specializing in pediatric liver diseases. She graduated from Sackler School of Medicine in 2016 and went on to complete her Pediatric Residency at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore from 2016-2019. She pursued a fellowship at Columbia-MSCHONY from 2019-2022, specializing in Pediatric Gastroenterology. Dr. Cantor further honed her expertise through a dedicated Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Fellowship, also at Columbia-MSCHONY, which she completed in 2023. Her extensive training encompasses the management of various liver diseases in pediatric patients, including neonatal cholestasis, biliary atresia, rare metabolic diseases, viral hepatitis, liver tumors such as hepatoblastoma, and autoimmune liver disease. With advanced training in the management of pediatric liver and intestinal failure, Dr. Cantor is experienced in providing comprehensive care for patients before and after liver, intestinal, and multi-visceral transplants. She performs a range of procedures, including percutaneous liver biopsy, endoscopy, variceal band-ligation, and colonoscopy, to ensure accurate diagnoses and optimal patient outcomes. Dr. Cantor's research interests include acute viral hepatitis, viral-induced liver failure, and the effects of COVID and MISC-C on liver function. During her fellowship, she authored several papers on liver injury associated with both COVID and MIS-C. Dr. Cantor is passionate about transition clinics, employing a methodical, team-based approach to empower adolescents in taking charge of their medical needs while facilitating a smooth transition to adult providers.

Biography: Dr. Pooja Reddy Spector is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and an Attending Pediatrician at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. She practices in the Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation. Prior to her faculty appointment, Dr. Spector earned a BA in Economics from the University of Virginia prior to pursuing her medical education at Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore and clinical fellowships in Pediatric Gastroenterology and Advanced Transplant Hepatology at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center. During this time, she pursued formal training in Patient Safety research and earned a Master's degree in Epidemiology from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health. During her time as a Patient Safety Research Fellow, she focused on utilizing health information technology to prevent medical errors and improve the quality and efficiency with which patient care is delivered. She continues this work as part of the Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP).
